Actually, your description is more [sub]coughcorrectcough[/sub] than mine, especially given that Donaldson used Wagner’s Ring series as a framework for the Gap series.

Someone recommended that to me years ago. And the first book was very good. And the second was very much less so. And the third just sucked. It seems to happen quite a lot in series, strong starts and then once the audience is hooked pathetically weak finishes.
