The kinda irony is that I’ve never actually seen Blazing Saddles.
I mean, I’ve probably seen the whole thing piecemeal in clips, as apparently every scene has some sort of poignant satirical commentary that becomes relevant to some topic or other, but I’ve never actually sat down and watched it beginning to end.
I should make time to do that sometime.
A lot of it doesn’t hold up and much of it, like Casablanca and Wizard of Oz, seems kind of tropey but, of course, they were the source of the trope.
But what are the odds you’d get cell reception in that remote part of desert? It’d just make the line: “Ah shit. I’ve only got one bar of service and no LTE. Someone’s gotta hike back to the interstate and find a cell tower or a hot spot to download the app!”
I heartily endorse it. While there are a lot of lines in the film that would make you cringe, it’s on purpose. The bigots are portrayed as idiots and assholes, even though some of them do come around later on. But overall it’s a damn funny film IMHO, even after all these years. It has something of a Looney Tunes aesthetic to it (especially from the protagonist, Sheriff Bart, who is basically a not-kid-friendly Bugs Bunny).
It never ceases to amuse me when bigots gripe about their free speech being taken away. You don’t have free speech on this message board any more than you should expect to have free speech when you’re a guest in someone’s home. “I can insult you to your face because it’s my right, and how dare you throw me out of your house?!”
Nobody who’s rational or paying attention ever said, “Free speech is the ability to say whatever I want with no consequences.” Apparently lots of folks aren’t rational and/or don’t pay attention.
“Choose your actions or choose your consequences; you don’t get to choose both”. Words to live by.
I honestly thought ZPG_Zealot was a troll doing an extended riff on the “elderly woman” in Blazing Saddles when she described how she would hurl racial slurs at people of color for “hitting on” her (which, from what I can gather, might have consisted of conduct as innocent as offering a handshake).
An excellent call by the mods to finally ban her.

Sometimes there is no functional difference though.
I know. But I was still newish at the time. Hadn’t quite got the lay of the land.

It’s been quite a while since I saw it, probably around the time it was released on DVD. Doesn’t Bart leave Mongo, after delivering the candy-gram, to the Looney Toons tune?
Also, as far as pitting Paul_is_a_shithead, I was considering insulting his creepy mass killing thread (insult the post, not the poster), but there was enough hijacking, and I didn’t want to be smacked by @engineer_comp_geek or @What_Exit.
Also, while I realize that the “more trouble than it’s worth” wouldn’t apply here (I don’t see him causing all that much trouble), I can’t help but wonder if he’s ever contributed anything worthwhile.

As the person who introduced Blazing Saddles into that ATMB thread, I wonder if people were including me in the list of bigots and the like who complain about the movie not being able to be made today. I’d like to think that my posting history shows otherwise.
