Ah, thank you. I’ve never seen that one.
It’s best seen as a public event of course, but strip away the audience participation and you’ve still got a delightfully weird and funny movie with several really catchy songs and Susan Sarandon’s nipples.
Saw it, meh. Saw it in public, meh.
But overall, I like the music.
Oh man. I remember seeing the previews for RHPS and thinking, “That looks okay.”
Then I saw RHPS, and I thought, “Geez. All the good stuff was in the previews so I already saw it…this is boring!”
Then a couple of years later some friends convinced me to go to a midnight showing, with the costumes and all, and that was kind of fun. I had friends who did it week after week. For years.
Once was enough for me, but it was definitely better as an interactive thing as opposed to just a movie.
Saw it in public … at college in Maine … but it was quite the little party. A friend of mine allegedly knew all the rituals and he was trying to school me on them as we were heading toward the show. But truthfully, we were so fucked up, as was most of the audience, it was closer to chaos than anything else. It was fun.
Watched it at home when it came out on DVD. Christ, what a shitty movie.

The Rocky Horror Show was at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway opening on 10 March 1975 after three preview performances. The Broadway production closed in less than a month after only 45 performances.
I was in the audience with five friends at one of the preview performances having won six free tickets from a radio station.
I still remember the show fondly. I never understood why it was panned by the critics.

It’s probably 20 years since I’ve gone to a midnight show. Ahh, what twisted memories. I used to take girls out on first dates to see Rocky Horror. It was a good way to judge if a girl shared my sense of humor. Does anyone happen to know where I could catch a midnight show in the Philly area?
I’m curious about that myself. I know, due to write ups in Philadelphia Weekly and The City Paper, that there are showings around Philly on a regular basis. I just don’t know exactly where.
It was absolutely the funnest thing I’ve ever done. If only there was some way to experience it again.
And again, and again.
Anyone know of a good regular performance of it in the Boston Metrowest area? I’d love to see it again.
Little Nell’s IIRC during The Floor Show?
My first time was 1979, during the day, with a cold audience. Got to say the movie isn’t much seen that way but the songs were catchy enough I saw it the proper way a year or so later, and about a dozen times since then. Not much by Rocky standards, but more times than most any other film I can think of.
I started wondering where some of the cast members are now. Not the stars like Susan Sarandon or Tim Curry of course, but rather the lesser-known ones. Such as Patricia Quinn (Magenta), whom I see “is now a top London barrister”! I don’t remember her at all in Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.
Peter Hinwood (Rocky Horror) is an antiques dealer in London. The role was the high point of his acting career. when asked why he did not pursue acting further, he answered: “I can’t act. Two, I cringe with embarrassment every time I see myself on film. Three, I relish a quiet, peaceful life.” Sixteen years ago, he stumbled across the gold hot pants he wore in the film and auctioned them off for almost US$1000.
Out of curiosity, has anybody here seen the kinda-sequel Schock Treatment? I’m a bit of a fan of it myself. If it has any connection to RHPS at all though, it’s a complete reboot, with only a couple of characters carried over without much change.
It is much better in public, or at least with a dozen crazy friends gathered around. I want my husband to see it, but I know it won’t be as good just renting it and watching it in our den.
Once you’ve seen it, though, it’s fun either way. I love RHPS.
It’s Shock Treatment, (Schlock Treatment was the parody) and you might want to read the thread before you post in it, specifically posts #73, 77, 80, 81, and 94.
**Patricia Quinn **played the wife of John Cleese when he was teaching the school boys sex ed, ‘what’s wrong with a kiss boy?’ Then he brought her in for a demonstration, ‘now dear, we’ll just take the foreplay as read, then, shall we’
Peter Hinwood, I remember reading, got Jesus in a big way and started regreting his Rocky days, even throwing people out of his store if they brought it up. although I can’t remember when I got that from, maybe it’s just internet gossip.
Apparently the whole thing with Peter Hinwood throwing people out of the store is an urban legend, and he’s actually quite okay with talking about Rocky Horror every now and then. Of course that’s just what I’ve read on the internet and either story could easily be true.
Little Nell owned nightclubs in the eighties and nineties, according to Wikipedia she is now retired.
Charles Gray (The Criminologist) and Jonathan Adams (Dr. Scott) passed away in 2000 and 2005 respectively.
Actually, I did read the thread a couple days ago, and as soon as I posted this bit, I was sure someone had talked about it. Not really sure why I didn’t read back to make sure.
Aha! I remember that scene, but I can’t quite picture what she looked like there.
