A Predator question

Arnold is crossing a chasm via a log bridge. In a tense moment, he realizes the monster is right behind him on the log. In a blink, Arnold is clinging to the bottom side of the log using his big muscles to hold on. I don’t see how he got there silently, and I don’t see how he gets back up on top. Is this an impossible scenario?

Certainly no more impossible than a sentient extraterrestrial big-game hunter with a convenient intersteller pickup truck, a bigger gun than he really needs, and on-demand invisibility.

Clearly, the situation demands suspending more than just Arnold.

A wizard did it.

Tried to find it. Found this instead.

lol

Predators are very adept at acquiring prey via various means, otherwise they would have gone extinct. I’m sure he would smell the location of his prey. If he couldn’t reach around with claws, snag the guy, and pull him up, he could wait him out. The guy would probably lose his grip and fall to his death, but at least he would avoid the horror of the monster.

This one’s better:

Predators aren’t really predators, they’re hunters.

It’s been awhile, but didn’t the predator have heat vision? Hanging under a log would have zero hiding effectiveness in that case.

Is there a distinction there I’m not aware of? I would have thought the two were pretty synonymous.

Perhaps I should specify sport hunter. The Predator isn’t hunting to eat.

True, but the storyline was that, when initially escaping the Predator, he crawled out of the water and wallowed his way through cool wet mud and coated his entire body. That made him “invisible” to the Predator. I’m thinking that’s a stretch. I’m sure his body heat began to dry out and warm up the mud immediately. Even if the effect was initially real, it wouldn’t last very long.

Ah, I see, thanks. Like I said, been awhile. Either your memory is better than mine, or you saw the movie more recently.

Just an addendum: In Predator 2, the government guys thought they all had it figured out so, because they were totally protected from his infrared vision, they thought they were safe. In the movie, the Predator switched through several different vision modes until he found one (ultraviolet I think) that worked and made them visible to him.

If they were true sportsmen, they would hunt with a bow.

Hunters like bigger, more impressive game as they make better trophies. Predators like smaller, less impressive game because it’s an easier fight. Ideally with a couple broken legs so it’s no fight at all. (Scare the herd and then as they run away look for the slow, small, weak easy target.)

Consider how Predator doesn’t consider you worth killing if you are unarmed and pose no threat, like when Arnold told the woman to toss her gun. Lowering her threat level like that would make her more appealing to an actual predator hunting for all of its food. Easy meal! But a trophy hunter like Predator is the complete opposite end of the spectrum, apparently having an honor code prohibiting easy kills.

The log has a relatively high thermal mass, it would shield Arnold from view.

How? If they wore a thick insulator, wouldn’t they heat up too much to function?

Why? Wood is not a good conductor of heat. On the contrary, it is more commonly used as insulation. The log should thus attenuate the heat from a human body so that it is less likely to be detected by a heat sensor on the opposing side of it.

Thanks, that’s a great explanation of the distinction.
