A prediction from "The Onion"

In short, NASA predicts a mass shooting on the moon by 2055. Only the Onion could get away with this.

However, in the book “Packing For Mars”, author Mary Roach described at least one mission on the space station that had to be cut short because two cosmonauts were on the verge of killing each other, and another because an astronaut was, in short, going insane. That book convinced me that we will never do interplanetary or interstellar travel, at least not with modern technology.

I think they must have gotten some crappy weed and fallen asleep watching Iron Sky.

“Insisting on perfect safety is for people who don’t have the balls to live in the real world.”—Mary Shafer, NASA Ames Dryden

That’s a good book isn’t it? I read it recently myself and it brought up all sorts of issues about space flight I hadn’t really considered (and some I’d have preferred not to have considered!).

The part on the simulated mission in Russia having to be abandoned as well was interesting, showed the kinds of intra-cultural misunderstandings that could happen on a long-scale mission.

I’ve read all of Mary Roach’s books, and watched her 3-hour interview on C-SPAN’s “About Books” earlier this year. She writes in a very entertaining way about things most of us would rather not think about.

I’ll have to check her other books out, as you say she is very entertaining to read.
