"A Price Above Rubies" (spoilers)

I saw ‘A Price Above Rubies’ last night on television. I liked it, but I was confused by a few things, and I missed a few minutes of it.

First, who exactly was Yossi? Was he a childhood friend or brother or what? Did he drown when he went swimming after Sonia was rude to him, or was it something else that killed him? If he was a dybbuk (which I suspect), it seems odd that someone who was apparently very devout would become one after death, even considering the possibility he died that night he went swimming to get away from Sonia.

Was Sonia supposed to be a nymphomaniac, or just not getting enough? She showed signs of having an unusually high sex drive (she seemed to get flustered very easily) but you’d think that she would have given in to her nature a lot sooner, especially since she was not raised in a particularly protective environment (she was urged to mary a holy man because he father didn’t want her to have to be around the people he worked with). I also feel that the rabbi would have given her husband more practical advice when it came to dealing with her sex drive - I read somewhere that the talmud says that healthy married men should have relations with their wife at least once a week, and preferably daily. I’d think he’d realize what the problem was, and have a private talk with her husband about balancing his studies with everyday life.

I was also surprised at all the graphic sex, considering this was being shown on a non-pay cable channel (Oxygen, which is kinda like Lifetime but better, at least in my male opinion). There was no nudity, but much clothed fucking.

I guess I’m the only person who’s seen it…

I saw part of it, but missed the beginning. I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not. I was also surprised at the graphic sex.

I went over to imdb.com to read some of their reviews of it and they helped me understand the part of the plot I missed. One of their members said pretty much what you said about the responsibility of the husband to satisfy the wife.
