A PSA: Sight != Site != Cite

I’m not usually much of a grammar nazi. I usually give folks the benefit of the doubt, since we all make typos or brain farts, and if I can understand you and you understand me, that’s all we need.

But for some reason this particular mistake irks me to no end. It exes me. And I’ve noticed an increase in frequency around here.

So as a public service:

Cite is short for Citation, an independent confirmation of fact.

Site is either short for Website, (i.e. a document available via http or similar protocol) or refers to an actual location in space.

Sight is something that is seen. It is not the same as either of the above.

Thank you.

(And I know it’s coming so I’ll make the jokes myself: the next three posts will most likely be: “Cite?” “Sight?” and “Site?”)

We should nuke the cite from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Paris has the Ile de la cite

You know, I hate to be a stickler, but can sight still equal cite, or did you mean, “sight ~= site ~= cite ~= sight”?

:smiley:

The sight of a cite from a reputable site excites me.

As we say (or should say) in Great Debates,

“Out of cite = out of mind.”
