A public service announcement for my fellow non-believers

This is one of the reasons why I’m uncomfortable using the word “stupid” to describe a person or group of people. It has no clear definition and is almost entirely subjective or contextual.

“Dumbass” is clearly a superior descriptive.

I am an athiest and I approve of this message too. Any organization that can amass as much money and power as the Catholic Church is not stupid.

I was mostly being a smart-ass with that part of the OP.

The message of the OP can’t be repeated enough. The problem isn’t Christians v. atheists, or Republicans v. Democrats, or Yankees v. Red Sox. The problem is, and always has been, assholes v. decent people. And you can find plenty of both on either side of just about any debate.

I loathe everybody equally.

Some of us Christians don’t necessarily like our fellow believers or their actions, but we love them because we believe God told us to.

Thanks so much, Skald.

I’ve been reading this thinking “boy, this Pit thread sucks big time. Too much love.” Then of course realized we’re in MPSIMS. So… never mind. Hugs all around.

I recently started a thread about an anti-Muslim forward my aunt (a conservative Christian) sent me. In a follow-up email, she said “Why don’t the moderate Muslims come out and object to what the fundamentalists do?” Well, I think that’s the issue with all of this: we moderates, Christians as well as Muslims, don’t stand up and say “That’s not what I believe” when the fundamentalists act like dumbasses. So Fred Phelps is on tv, but no moderates are out there making headlines going “Fred Phelps is a dumbass. We [i.e. normal Christians] don’t believe that God smites people, he didn’t make 9/11 happen because of gay marriage, he didn’t send Katrina because of abortion. Oh and we think people who kill abortion doctors are wacko too.” So all anyone hears - about Muslims or Christians or atheists - is what the very loud obnoxious extremists say.

It’s hard to be a moderate and have enough passion about whatever, whether it’s religion or politics or sports, to get out and make noise. So only the passionate fringes are heard, and the rest of the world thinks they’re nutcases and then extrapolates and assumes all of that group must be nutcases.

But the similar pit thread has bong hits for Thor and at least one rather nifty pun.

Word.

Thank you Skald.

When ever I read the “Anyone who believes is an idiot” comments that get posted around here, I feel that I should start a thread like this, but I’ve been to, umm, passive? chicken? to do it.

As a “I’m no longer sure what I am”, thank you.

There is a difference between “doesn’t get said” and “doesn’t make headlines.” The Spanish College of Bishops delivers press releases weekly, but they get to the headlines about once a year tops; that is, only when there’s an election going on, for saying literally “vote according to your conscience,” or when Parliament is considering a law related to abortion/divorce/education - when those subjects are up for discussion, if the bishops said “there’s a warning of heavy storms on the Galician coast, please stay away from the seashore” it would make headlines.

I’m married to one… and her father is a minister. (And a smart guy). And her mother’s also a minister’s daughter.

No; some are ignorant, fools, or insane. Being Christian is a stupid thing; if the Christian isn’t literally stupid, then they have some other reason for acting stupid. There’s no good reason to be Christian; only bad ones.

Being Christian is a silly thing in itself. And it does lean strongly towards the promotion and excuse of evil behavior. Being Christian is not a nice thing to be.

Who is this even directed at? Aside from Der Trihs, I don’t recall anyone on this board expressing the broad sentiment that Christians are stupid and/or evil.

This seems to be some sort of feel-good post that everyone agrees with and no one has really said anything to the contrary. On that note, KITTENS AND PUPPIES ARE CUTE!

(Maybe that’s MPSIMS. I normally don’t come here but I saw the thread title from the front page…)

That’s 99% of MPSIMS, aye.

Some of my best friends are Christians, too. Not that I’d want my daughter to marry one, mind you…
Some of my other best friends are Jewish and Muslim. A few are Buddhist and Hindu. Some are even Atheists. And the daughter thing is a joke, just so long as she doesn’t marry a Scientologist it’s all good. I’m even kidding, if only a bit, on that last part.

Der Trihs, this isn’t appropriate for MPSIMS. You’re allowed to disagree, but if you want to do another few rounds on how atheism is the only acceptable (to you) intellectual stance, pls. start a thread in the Pit or GD and link to it.

Thanks.

You know what would be lovely? If you posters who so proudly spout, “Oh, I never read MPSIMS,” like it’s some kind of achievement, would actually read it once in a while. Or would coming down off your clouds be bad for your breathing?
