Why Are Athiest Assholes?

Really, what is your problem?

Not a link, a cite, or an example of atheist assholism in the OP.

Would you care to be more specific in your rant?

Yes, I’m an atheist. No, I don’t consider myself to be an asshole in terms of anyone’s religious beliefs. I accept that some people believe a deity of some kind exists and I regard that as their personal business and choice until suck time as they try to impose the dogma of their own personal beliefs on others.

I think you’ll find many atheists on the SDMB who genuinely want to understand more about the beliefs of others without feeling obliged to adopt those beliefs for themselves. Most of the time, it works - people give honest answers to honest questions and we all learn a bit more and understand each other a bit better.

So if you’d like to complain about specific actions by specific atheists, I’m pretty sure that the atheists, the agnostics, and the believers alike around here would all like to here those complaints and respond to them.

Welcome to the SDMB

Gaudere’s law.

“suck time” should, of course, read “such time”.

Personally, I’m an atheist only to piss off Apache.

Thank you for the welcome.

There really seems to be not just a rejection of any religious belief, which is your right, but an openly hostile effort to squash any type of religious expression.
There is also a frequent effort to portray anybody that hold a religious belief as an intellectually inferior and to associate them with extremist causes.

If you don’t believe in any type of a Deity, then why try to vilify those that do?

You’re new here, so some slack might be in order.

I am emphatically not an atheist (I am a Christian), but I am participating in some threads on the topic in Great Debates. For the most part, the atheists arguing on the other side from me are doing me the favor of refraining from asshole-ism.

They are also attempting to use logic, and to give examples. This being the Pit, the standards are different, but concrete examples and rational argument nearly always go better than simple accusations.

Unless you just needed to rant, in which case say so. You will still get reamed, but in more colorful language.

We are here because we like to argue. Some do it well, others poorly. Feel free to take whatever track you like.

Regards,
Shodan

PS - May the Lord be with you. (Anyone care to squash that expression?)

Certainly not on this board, which has some prominent deist posters. If you’re referring to the recent PoA debacle or other such, many people don’t want any particular religion rammed down our throats, nor should any one religion be supported by this government over any other, or over none at all.

Many religionists are extremist and promote extremist causes. As for “intellectually inferior,” if the only evidence a deist can offer to support their beliefs is “because I believe it” or “because (insert name or names of deity or deities here) says so”… that just doesn’t hold up. I could believe that wearing purple socks is the epitome of all things good, but I would need to offer evidence to support that in debate, rather than just saying, “why, because it is!”

The Sioux lawyer Vine Deloria once wrote, “What we need is a leave-us-alone law.” Similarly, if certain religions would tend to themselves and leave the rest of us alone, there wouldn’t be a conflict.

I think you’ll find the kind of behaviour you speak of pretty exceptional around here; most of us simply try to understand the beliefs, attitudes and opinions of our fellow posters in respect of religious beliefs or lack thereof.

I’m pretty sure that Polycarp will wander in here eventually, and he’s one of the very kind of people who make it easier for us atheists or other non-Christians to understand how faith can be deep without being judgemental or condescending.

We have people of many different faiths in our community, and we have many posters of no faith at all. I hope you’ll stay around long enough to see that in general people do not get vilified for their religious or beliefs or lack thereof around here - they attract hostility when they are being assholes or jerks, and neither religion or atheism will protect them from the consequences of being a jerk.

If you check out Great Debates, you’ll find many thoughtful discussions of religion have taken place here in the past. I hope you’ll stay around to contribute to such discussions in the future.

Yes, there are atheists who do all of the above.
There are also “believers”* who are openly hostile towards anyone who does not believe in God, who are unbearably smug and/or condescending in their attitude toward them, and who are actively engaged in attempting to force others to follow their beliefs.
Maybe we could put all the militany atheists and militant believers into the same confined space and let them duke it out, so that those of us who are interested in reasoned discourse can do so in peace.

*I am using this as a generic term for anyone with religious beliefs, rather than single out any specific belief. I’m familiar with the terms deist and theist, but this early in the morning my brain isn’t functional enough to remember the distinction (if any) between them.

And, of course, as an offshoot of my semi-functioning mental functioning, I neglected to preview, or I would have been aware (as I should have suspected would happen) that several of my fellow Dopers have already made the same points I did.

I have to say that I believe this open hostility is found among all belief sets, and it is not a function of whatever belief is in question. This hostility happens when paucity of imagination and lack of empathy combines with a ridiculous surety that this and only this belief system is correct. When those three character traits combine in a person who has no manners at all, then you get an asshole.

There’s assholes in every creed.
There’s asshole advocating every philosophy.

There’s also bad grammar in every one of my posts.

Bloody unreliable deities - that Invisible Pink Unicorn is never around when you need her…

If I was the kind of person who might, for example, refer to a nonsmoker as a “whinny [sic] little bed-wetter” and wished for them to “die from second-hand smoke,” I might be a little more careful who I characterized as an “asshole,” lest my own bad karma bear down on my pointy little head.

I’m just saying, is all.

Again with the atheist bashing. That double edge sword swings both ways.

If I started a thread title “Why are Christians so Stupid”, the entire content being, “Seriously, what is their problem?”, I’d be friggin lynched.

Here’s a hint, were assholes when we need to be. And now is one of those times. Go fuck yourself.

I’m sorry, but this pisses me off.

“Why are Jews such assholes?”
“Why are Buddhists such assholes?”
“Why are Christians such assholes?”
“Why is Apache such an asshole?”

I’ve met my share of asshole athiests and asshole Christians. Assholism knows no faith. Just weed the assholes out, ignore them, and meet the nice Christians/athiests/whatever. Not even all fundies are assholes, I know a couple that are real nice. But don’t judge all athiests based on a few you’ve met.

(BTW, I believe in God, but I’m non-denominational)

i think that atheism coincides only somewhat with assholism, but it does correlate.

atheists are, in general, very sure of their beliefs and plenty are not afraid to make their beliefs known. In order to be perceived as an “asshole” you have to A)hold strong or shocking beliefs, and B)present them in a shocking or inept manner. Atheists generally are halfway there, having already fulfilled (A).

After all, if an atheist were unsure in their beliefs, they wouldnt be an atheist, theyd be an agnostic, like myself. Therein lies the crux. After all, plenty of theists are unsure of their beliefs, but consider themselves theists anyway (“faith”). Since they dont fulfill criteria (A), we dont consider them assholes.

I just gotta come in here and stand up for the “atheists” on this board!! Now maybe some of you may have some “assholeness” in you (who doesn’t?), but from what I’ve experienced, I see a lot of “you treat me kindly and I’ll do the same to you” mentality. IMO that kind of attitude only stems from kind, intelligent people who are here on the SD to converse with others on the same level. Yeah, there may be a lot of "Well, it must not be true if you can’t prove it ;), but if your firm in your belief Apache, then whatever anyone else says shouldn’t have any effect on that.
So spend some time here (welcome btw  ) and get involved in some debates. Don’t be a jerk yourself, like you did when you started this thread. Just hang out and get to know the place a little before you start making accusations. Hope to see ya’ around :).
next thing you know dreamer will be walking around with a t-shirt that says “Atheists Rule!!”

Excellent! can I use that?
