According to this article on 'Id Al-Adha (the “Festival of Sacrifice”) by Dr. Ahmad Shafaat at the Islamic Perspectives website, “’Id al-adha is a kind of joining in hajj by those who could not make it to Makkah” through special prayers and sacrifices.
