A Question about the Wolfman/Perez Teen Titans

My son is really digging the TT cartoons and watching them with him is really giving me a nostalgic taste for the Wolfman/Perez era.

I am thinking about going back and trying to collect the complete run.

The thing that always confused me was the comic Tales of the Teen Titans.

It seemed like it was a reprint series for a while, but also a first run series at times.

What issues would I need to collect to get a complete run of the Wolfman/Perez stories and in what order would I read them?

This is going to cost me, isn’t it?

Presuming Tales of the Teen Titans was like Tales of the Legion of Superheroes, it was a first-run series for its first year (after Teen Titans moved over to a Baxter Book), then, after a year, it became a reprint book, picking up the stories from TT a year late.

Of course, it might NOT have worked like Tales of the Legion, but that seems somewhat unlikely.

I wrote a reading order for the Teen Titans, which you can get here. More basically, the order of the series are:

New Teen Titans v1
Tales of the New Teen Titans (mini)
Tales of the Teen Titans
New Teen Titans v2
New Titans (Perez leaves after #61)

There’s also Teen Titans Spotlight during the same period, but Wolfman only wrote a few of the stories.

Tales of the Teen Titans starts from #41 (taking off from the New Teen Titans numbering), and was original stories through #58. #59 might be worth getting as well, however, since it reprints some harder to find stories.

And yes, collecting a full run will cost you.

Tales of the Teen Titans had 18 original issues from 4/1984 to 10/1985. The Titans Baxter Book started in 8/1984. I’m not sure whether that matches up with Tales of the Legion or not.

Not quite. Tales of the Legion started the same month the Baxter LoSH did, August '84, starting with #314, and had 12 original issues before going to reprints of the Baxter run with #326.

Do you need the actual back issues, or would you be satisfied with the Archive Editions ? They’re collected in a hardback book. 230 pages, $49.95 each. Two editions out to date, probably the most affordable alternative.

As for Tales of the Teen Titans: Get 'em if you’re a completist, but there was a noticeable dropoff in quality after Perez left (though the Barreto issues were swell).

You can get the Archive Editions on Amazon for around 1/3 less.

Oh, yeah, there is a comic book based on the TV show, entitled Teen Titans! GO!. Separate from the regular comics continuity, it is part of DC’s kids line.

Heck, no. I’d prefer the collected versions!

What issues do they cover?

Ten issues each (Vol. I covers New Teen Titans 1-10, Vol. II covers issues 11-20, plus the first one has the teaser from DC COMICS PRESENTS).

Widely available at most comics shops and large bookstores.

BTW–they’re hardcovers, good ones, too.

And, as I said, you can get em at a sizeable discount on Amazon.

34% off.

These are collection of the comic based on the TV series. Cheaper in price, but your kid may prefer them.

Enjoy!
