The Waltham watch Co, was one of the first great firms to mass-produce watches. The company was in business almost 100 years-sadly, it closed its doors in 1958. The company wasknown for many innovations in the watchmaking business…one of them was the use of diamon jewel bearings in their top line of watches (most manufactureres use synthetic ruby jewels). Does anybody know how many such watches were made, and what the model names were?
Strange that such a innovative firm lost out…at one time, Waltham made more watches than the combined output of allof the Swiss watchmakers!
This webpage says that Waltham changed into Waltham Precision Instrument Company in 1957, and didn’t go out of business until 1972. I seem to remember receiving a Waltham watch as a gift in 1976, and had it repaired by them after that.
Your OP sent to scrambling for my high school graduation present from my parents. It was a Waltham watch. On the dial it says “Hallmark,” but on the back of the case it says “Waltham.” I graduated in 1961, but it is possible that the watch was actually made before the company changed its name.
I had never noticed the name of the company until a young man in college told me that that was a good watch.
I do remember that it disappeared for years and that I found it buried inside my sofa.
