A question for business owners .....

this was brought up in the papa johns thread http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=840557 but it got me wondering …

Ok you own a retail business and a recession hits and your store takes a dive in business So you come up with a discounted deal say 2 widgets for 7.99 dosent matter what they are specifically

So it becomes popular brings about a ton of goodwill because hey your realizing everyones broke too And its enough to keep you open but it doesn’t make you a whole lot

Now its 6 or 7 years later and youre losing money because of it and theres no need for it because things are better overall

How do you wean everyone off the deal so you can make money again with out losing the good will?

Change the design/recipe/packaging. That way it doesn’t seem like you raised the prices on the old model.

Make up for it in volume.

Actually, in real life, the prices of competitive alternatives would rise, allowing you to raise the price and still seem like a good deal. Consumers understand that prices rise.

Nobody is butt-hurt that you can’t get tacos for .29 cents anymore. Well, maybe just me.

oh I miss getting 5 tacos for a buck at del taco too … now its 3 for 1.29 on Tuesday and 3 chicken tacos on Thursday for 1.49

And with that you answered your own question.

You come up with alternate “deals” that aren’t as good but aren’t directly comparable. IOW, if you can’t dazzle 'em with brilliance, baffle 'em with bullshit.

Don’t replace 2/7.99 with 2 of the exact same thing for 9.99. that’s a straight price increase and will cause hate & anger.

Instead replace 2/7.99 with 1 larger size for 9.99 instead of the original 11.99. Except on Tuesdays where it’s 2 of the larger size for 14.99. But those don’t come with free drinks. etc.

Inch the price up till people stop thinking it’s a great deal.
