Does the NCAA really prohibit true freshmen from playing football? I thought freshmen were allowed. Isn’t Colt McCoy (Univ. of Texas) a true freshman? Was this a rule in the 1970’s and has been changed in more recent years?

This rule was a bit of a plot point during the movie.

That *was * the NCAA rule at the time of the movie, but it has since been rescinded.

Found it. Freshmen were ineligible for NCAA varsity teams from 1939 to 1972. The movie is set in 1970.
