A question on posting copy from Facebook

Some time ago I quoted the full text of a Facebook post by Jim Wright, with attribution and link to the olriginal, since his rants are generally long and really should be read in full.

Just before posting that quote I wrote a preceding post replying to another poster:

I understand and support the prohibition of quoting long stretches, beyond fair use size, of copyrighted material, but I wonder whether that should apply to a Facebook post being quoted at length, at least if full attribution and a link to the original are supplied.

Jim Wright has had his posts ripped off and republished without credit in other online platforms, which rightfully pisses him off, but he does allow quotation and reposting of his Facebook stuff as long as it is correctly attributed to him.

I would think the issue is that the mods have no idea who has given permission to quote with attribution in normal circumstances. Maybe if you do another similar post, you could also copy that permission slip.

Why wouldn’t it apply? It’s not a question of attribution. Facebook posts, like posts pretty much anywhere on the internet, are automatically copyrighted as soon as you create the post. You can copy small bits under “fair use”, but copying the entire post goes well beyond fair use. Adding a link and attribution doesn’t change that.

Unless you explicitly provide a link or info to where Jim Wright gives permission for the post to be reposted elsewhere, we’re going to assume that you don’t have permission to repost it.

Also, if his posts are a long rant, you should just link to it instead of copying the entire post. Just because you think the post should be read in full is no reason to copy the entire thing here.

Very well. I’m glad I asked and got clarification. If one isn’t logged into Facebook, is it still possible to read posts there? I tried logging out of FB to check but it kept trying to auto-log me back in and I wound up having to reset my doggone password, so gave up.

I’ve sent a PM to Jim Wright to inquire as a general matter whether he’ll give permission for posting his attributed and linked copy here. Given his literal thousands of FB friends and followers on two accounts (under his name and under Stonekettle Station) I can’t predict when (or even if) he’ll see it, but will post here whatever reply eventually arrives.

It depends on the permission settings the orignal poster used, and to some degree what kind of account they have.
