My Dad passed away last December. My mother received a letter from the SS administration, informing her of a small amount of money which a firm that my Dad had worked for, had in its pension fund.
I called the Massachusetts Dept. of Corporations, and found that the firm went bankrupt in 1990… they were unable to say whether any assets were left.
I suspect that this money is long gone…but is there anything more I can do to see if there is any money left in some pension account?
The US Dept. (Pension Control Board) was unable to locate anything as well.
If the firm had a trust account for its pension fund, maybe you can fnd that. Alternatively, there is a fedderal body that takes over and pays a portion of pension funds unable to meet their obligations; although IIRC the last decade of airline pension debacles has put a serious crimp in its operations. http://www.pbgc.gov/
Also it would depend upon the terms of the pension agreement. If there was no death benefit included, which is uncommon in the US, your mother may not be entitled to anything.
