I know of three major “hot” wars between Israel and its A-rab neighbors: The 1948 war for independence, the Six Day War of the mid 60s, and the Yom Kippur War of the early 70s.
But wasn’t there a hot war in the mid-late 50s? I’m familiar with the other ones, how they started, and their resolutions–but how did that one (this third one) come about? I just seem to recall that there was some US/UN brokered cease fire.
Israel allied with France and Britain and invaded the Sinai peninsula when France/GB attempted to seize the Suez Canal after Nasser nationalized it. I believe this was in 1956, although 1953 is sticking in my mind for some reason.
Under intense pressure from Eisenhower and the U.S., GB, France, and (a bit later), Israel all pulled out.
BTW, the word is “Arab”, not “A-rab”. If you use the word “A-rab”, people might mistake you for a racist hick.
1953 was the year when the Egyptian monarchy was abolished and Egypt was declared a republic. Originally, the republic was ruled by Mohammed Naguib but he was eventually forced out by Gamal Nasser.
Speaking hieroglyphly……Whoa ! I’m beginning to feel a little fezzed by the bazaar twists. Not sure I know the book, did the movie version star Cleo de Patraio ?
