Which is one reason I don’t buy them very often. They’re yummy, but I can never time the ripeness right and end up with ruined fruit that would’ve been fine the previous meal.
They’ll never ripen if refrigerated, but if allowed to ripen they’ll stay ripe for a long time refrigerated. You have to keep on top of them, buying the greenest ones possible, and rotating them into the refrigerator as they ripen.
You can refrigerate them after ripening to keep them fresher longer, eh? I did not know that! I guess I assumed they’re something you never refrigerate, like tomatoes, or it supposedly makes the tomatoes mealy. Does refrigeration change the avocados’ consistency or anything?
So the process is to let them ripen on the counter, and then once ripe sick them in the fridge straight away and that retards any further ripening / spoilage at least for a while?
Yes. That’s the entire job of a refrigerator: slow down chemical reactions. Like others have mentioned here, my wife and I move avocados in or out of the fridge depending on whether we need them to ripen faster or almost-not-at-all. They’ll persist for a long time in the fridge with little change to their state of ripeness.
I wasn’t aware of that. Assuming I can find any at a reasonable price I’ll have to try that.
I was talking about this news story with a coworker. He just laughed. He’s from the L.A. area and his sister, who still lives there, has avocado trees in her back yard. He said she’ll just hook him up. Lucky dude.
Yeah, the USA grows 200K tons a year. Although imported from Mexico avocados keep the price down, we have enough.
Has anyone here tried making their own avocado ice cream?
We import almost three times that amount, though.
It wasn’t the first threat an inspector received. The US government had warned about what would happen if there were further threats.
In another case, the US government has banned Mexican fishers from entering US waters because Mexico isn’t preventing fishers from using nets to catch fish, thereby killing endangered porpoises.
From the O.P. -
approximately 50,000 metric tons of avocados sold in the country each month.
Now, I ain’t the best at math, but …
Millennials will have to switch to avocado toast points.
Yeah, the nets defeat the whole porpoise.
I’m sorry.
50,000 tons a month is 600k tons a year. So apparently the US grows about a third of what you need (as others have said upthread)
Yes, and so No one is saying Mexican avocados aren’t the bulk of the market. But people are acting like there will be no avocados at all in the USA. USA avocados will be more expensive, no doubt.
There may be some regions of the US that will be without avocados. Lord knows we’re having enough supply line issues these days.
I expect California will be adequately supplied for the simple reason they grow there. Places further away could have problems.
Yeah, you make a point. Since I live in CA, and many have a avocado tree in their backyard, I didn’t foresee a huge shortage here. But elsewhere? Could be.
Note that the USA has only fairly recently allowed Mexican avocados in, since 1997.
Avocados have also soared popularity in the Midwest during that time period as well. Back in the 1990’s they were seen as “exotic” in this part of the country. Now they’re in every damn thing. There’s a much higher demand for them than 30 years ago.
Again, this might not apply to California. It’s does apply to Indiana, where I live.
Stopped at my co-op to pick up some organic veg and eggs today. No avocados in sight.
I worry about the amazing guacamole at the local Mexican places. It tastes nothing like the stuff you buy in the stores. I didn’t know I liked guac until I had that stuff.
