A Sad Day in my Home Town

I live in Evansville Indiana. Since 1956, Whirlpool has been a major employer here, keeping thousands of families with a roof over their heads, clothes on theor backs and food in their bellies. Not just Whirlpool itself, but many smaller factories that supplied them with parts. My father worked there proudly for 40 years. He loved it there. We always had Whirlpool appliances in the kitchen.

Today my father is turning over in his grave, because the execs at Whirlpool announced that they are closing the doors, moving production to Mexico.

This is going to cost thousands of jobs here. I am already unemployed, have been unemployed since May, and despite having put in more applications than I care to think about, anywhere from 1 to 10 a week, have not gotten so much as a single interview.

This could be the death of my home town. The town I was born in, grew up in. I don’t know what I am going to do. If finding a job was difficult before, it will be impossible now.

I am in shock, numb. I cannot imagine Whirlpool not being there, over a million and a half square feet of factory on Highway 41. I don’t know how my home town can survive this.

That is awful, Papsett.

I really wish there was a way to monetarily penalize American companies that do that. Yes, I know, it’s pipe dream, but it’s a visceral reaction on my part. I just get angry when I read about stuff like this. It’s just wrong, economy in the tank, and these greedy bastards move production to Mexico. This helps our economy, how? We all know the cost of their appliances certainly won’t be coming down.

I’ve been mulling over getting a new dishwasher. You can bet your ass it probably won’t be Whirlpool.

I wish you the best of luck in your job hunt and hope that something comes up soon.

Consumers could decide to only buy from companies that keep jobs in your country?

The government could impose a tariff. Or is that blasphemy?

You can bet your ass that I will never buy Whirlpool again, and I thank those of you who join me in this.

The whole town is in an outrage. One woman called into a news show and said the government shoud triple the import tax on companies like this and I agree.

Now there is some conviction!

Whirlpool makes appliances that are sold under other brands, such as some Kenmore appliances, so you’re smart to leave yourself some wiggle room. You could buy something that Whirlpool manufactured without knowing it.

I recommend writing to them and letting them know why you aren’t purchasing their products anymore. Otherwise they have no idea that this is part of the cause of reduced sales and not just the economy as a whole. Encourage other people to write to them as well and to be very clear that their moving thousands of jobs away from our nation when they are so desperately needed is the exact reason why they are losing business.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t leavea lot of non-Whirlpool brands. All of these are made by Big W:

Roper
Maytag
Magic Chef
Kitchen Aid
Jenn-Air
Gladiator
Estate
Amana

Crap, I knew they manufactured Kenmore as well, but I was completely unaware they manufactured Jenn-Air.

I guess I’ll have to do some research when I do buy the dishwasher.

The government, unfortunately, will not impose a tariff on them.

As far as buying only American, I don’t think there is any major product that is wholly produced in the US anymore.

It would be hypocritical of me to say that I’m only buying American products. Hell, one of my cars is produced in Germany. I certainly didn’t mean to imply that I buy only American products in my previous post.

What I say or do isn’t going to make an impression on a large company. I can only do my little part, I guess. My little part is try to avoid purchasing any products produced by this particuar company. That’s it, plain and simple.

Distressing news, PapSett! :frowning: My husband grew up in Owensboro (though we don’t live there now). I’m familiar with your city. I wish you the best of luck in your job search.
