As we were driving around a sharp bend on the Alaskan highway, a large crow slammed right into our windshield. Of course the bird was killed on impact, but not only did it shatter our windshield, it pierced it. We had to use pliers to dislodge its beak.
Living in the basement apartment, we get a lot of visitors, one of which started building a web across the top of our water pitcher…during dinner.
Once, when i was walking the dog at night, I stopped under a steet lamp and felt a large bug land on my hand. I brushed it away without looking, thinking that it had awfully pointy toes and large wings. That was when I realized - a bat had just decided to use my hand to perch - upside down.
I know it’s silly, but I’m freaked out by really large moths-the ones that are a dusty tan color with big eyes that seem to stare at you…anyway, one day I was driving and a really HUGE one flew into my car and began fluttering around my face. I stopped the car in the middle of a 4 lane street, leaped out of my car and stood there, about 5 feet away, hyperventilating, until it flew out of my car. There were several puzzled drivers who passed me while staring back at me. I’m sure they thought I was an escaped mental patient. Couldn’t blame 'em, either.
I had an experience similar to lorinada’s, but I’m a guy.
I was driving along a not-too-busy street when a wasp (or maybe a bee) brained itself on my outside mirror and bounced into my crotch. So there I was trying to steer and work the clutch and brake while standing up. I got out of traffic, swept the still-stunned critter onto the pavement, and stomped it about six times. (That’s why I don’t know just what it was - I didn’t stop to look.) Then I just leaned on the car and waited for my heart to slow down.
As an aside, it’s pretty easy to catch a bothersome wasp out of the air; the trick is getting rid of it before it decides to get mad. So, line up your hand, grab, and in the same motion snap downward to bounce the wasp on the pavement. The wasp will be stunned long enough to stomp on (see above for the recommended stomping technique).
