I am fully admitting I should know this, but I don’t (mostly due to inexperience).
If I want to join the Orange County Library System here in Orlando, can I do that at any branch and have it be good for all the other branches?
Not that it matters much, but the reason I’m asking is because I want to join the system, but because of other errands and such it’ll be easier to join a different branch than the one that’s closest to my apartment. I don’t want to check anything out, just join.
So I can do that right? I can join the library by going to the downtown branch, but use any library I want to in the system to actually check things out?
I’m in the area and have never taken out a book from a public library in Florida so I Googled that for you. This link implies that any resident of Orange County can become a member of Orange County Library System. I can only assume that once you have the card you can check out books from any member library.
Depends strictly on the library system … if it’s a county wide system then most likely your library card will work at all the branches … but that’s not a hard and fast rule …
I have a weirdness here … I’ve a card from my local teeny tiny rural town library and that does not allow me to check out books at the nearby Big City library … however, I can check out books at the local Big University … which is about three times bigger than the Big City library … phaw … just stupid IMEIO …
I would think that any local “Library System” would include a single membership list that grants members borrowing rights at any library in the system. Otherwise it would just be “a bunch of libraries in the same county.”
You’d like to think that, but you wouldn’t necessarily be right.
Library systems are complicated and have different rules about registering and usage, that often don’t make obvious sense.
I checked out the OCLS website and called them up to confirm for sure, and you can register for an adult resident card at any location, as long as you live in the county, but DO NOT LIVE in the cities of “Winter Park” or “Maitland.”
If you don’t live either of those two places, you can either go to a library in person and get your card processed immediately, or if you prefer, you can register online here: https://websecure.ocls.info/register.asp and they’ll start the process, and when you use the card in person the first time at a library they’ll confirm the info and finish/confirm the card account.
It’s not a stupid question at all: every system is different, and it’s smart to check before you go.
WAG: Big City library is paid for by property taxes of people who live in Big City, and which you don’t contribute to. Big University and its library have different funding sources.
That’s exactly the case. If you wanted to use the city library, you might be able to pay a certain amount. That’s often the case for folk who live in unincorporated areas.
Also, may library systems have reciprocity, and/or are in linked organizations such that a cardholder of one library system can use the others’ services/materials.
Just curious, OP - how old are you? Just trying to think of a time in my life that I haven’t had at least one library card.
