A sweet & joyful prose quote--from H.P. Lovecraft!

No, I’m not being sarcastic, the great voice of American horror also wrote this, during his Dream Cycle period.

That is…touching.

Remind me of C.S. Lewis, or something from The Wind In The Willows".

That is a beautiful paragraph. There’s the image of awaking in the middle of the night, with the dream image still present; very Lovecraftian. And ‘phantasm’ is a good Lovecraft word. It’s strange, in a nice way, to read something of his without noisome, chtonic, or eldritch.

No unrelenting horror.

Only the beauty that we lose when we “mature”.

Thanks for that. I’ll have to save that one.

Celephaïs is in print, in one of his collections. I’ve got it…somewhere…

My books are in storage, so I cannot look this up, but I seem to recall some cool imagery in “The Strange High House in the Mist”. And the last few paragraphs of “The Silver Key”.

It’s too bad that Lovecraft made his money from horror stories. His non-horror stuff was a lot better.

More accurately, it’s a Dunsany pastiche. Much as I like Lovecraft, Dunsany was better at being Dunsanian than Lovecraft was.

If you like the poetic stuff, you should also check out Clark Ashton Smith if you’re not already familiar with his work.

I own 3 of the 4 volumes of his Complete Fantasys.

Volume 4 ain’t out yet.

And yes, I enjoy Dunsany.
