On “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, a head bob with the beat is a must, right? (Don’t answer.)
But the third beat on the first three, uh, song… chunks… is irregular, so I always go too quick and look like a dork. (Yeah, yeah okay so I look like a dork anyway.)
Homer, the strange looks you get aren’t from your irregular head-bobbing. Most people have only recently been able to get that horrible song out of their heads. Now here you come along, boom-box entrenched firmly on shoulder, “Eye of the Tiger” blasting out of it, not only planting the tune back in people’s subconscious but also reminding them that Mr. T. used to have an acting career. That’s just cruel, man.
Maybe it changes time signatures or some portion of the arrangement is doing something fun with the time signature it’s in (like playing triplets).
I remember how happy I was when I learned that most of Pink Floyd’s “Money” is in 7/4 time (the guitar solo, I think, changes to 4/4). Before that, I thought I just couldn’t keep time!
This may only apply to pigeons, but perhaps the band members are so stoned they are merely trying to keep their balance. See Cecil Adams on head-bobbing.
