Could she mean J.P. Tod?
I looked at BlueFly.com and found Tod’s-perhaps that’s it?
Look under Women’s, then Handbags, then Tod’s.
Bluefly’s is a markdown site, but even with the discount, the cheapest bag was $760!
How old is your daughter?
I bet she means JP Tod like Katriona says. Those bags are pretty pricey, ranging from $725 to jusst under $2000. Here’s some ateluxury and Neiman’s.
You can get one for under $400.00 on ebay, if you’re so inclined.
If you are, I like blue.
My, my, my  Even at eBay prices those fall under the heading of “I don’t love my kids that much!”
Hell, at those prices they fall under the heading of “I don’t love myself that much, and I have a JOB!” (suddenly the pricey Coach bag I splurged on 5 years ago seems quite reasonable by comparison!)
Is this all extrinisic value (a hot trend, IOW,) or is there something that actually makes these bags worth all this $$$?
WHOA!!! ok, the over-priced bag is out!!! What was she think’n?!!!
she’s 21, and she’ll have to settle for a nice purse for under $150.00
I was just curious, because if she were a minor and not working, well, there you go.
Eeep, if I paid that much for a purse, that purse better be able to clean the house and make me dinner.
Actually, there’s a good chance any “Tod” purse you find on Ebay for under $400 is a counterfeit. It’s illegal to sell them, and a Federal crime to send them through the mails. But that doesn’t seem to stop a lot of people. I would hesitate to buy any luxury purse on Ebay. And I’d scour the seller’s feedback with a fine-toothed comb and with Toolhaus.org before ever putting in a bid.
You might also get lucky and get a real one. But pay with your credit card in case you get bait-and-switched, because few of the sellers of fakes will actually refund money. They have terms of sale like “refunds happily provided if you can get a written statement that it’s not authentic from an authorized seller” Except that no seller of authentic purses is going to authenticate such things in writing, so you can’t meet the seller’s terms, ergo you’re out a few hundred bucks.
Yeah. Tods are gorgeous and sumptuous and rich. But. Well. I carry a little fringed, beaded leather bag I got at a yard sale for $.25 and get a lot of compliments. I like my math better.
blink
How does that work? I mean, given that Neiman-Marcus, eLuxury, etc. sell them openly, you’d think they’d have to be legal, right?
A hunerd and fift—do you know how much…god, I don’t know…pig iron you could buy with that? Pig iron and, like…unprocessed rice?
I think Chotii means that it’s illegal to sell any counterfeit merchandise, not that well-known department stores sell counterfeit merchandise. But yeah, the sentence structure was a little confusing.
**Chotii ** is right that you should never, *ever * expect to get a genuine *new * Tod for that price. You could probably pick up a gently used one, but you should definitely be careful.
Besides, a bag like that is a luxury item, and (IMO, YMMV, etc. etc.), you don’t buy a “gently used” Tod’s, and you certainly don’t get it as a gift from your parents. If bags are your thing, then you buy *yourself * a gorgeous new Tod’s (or insert the bag of your choice, anywhere from Coach to Chloe to Kelly) because you’ve “made it”, and you can.
Let’s face it… a Birkin is meant to say to the world “I can spend several thousand dollars on a handbag without blinking.” If you’re gonna say it, you should mean it.*
*Says I, who, for the record, has never spent more than $300.00 on a bag. If you’re carrying a Birkin, you’re totally picking up the dinner tab.
You might want to clairify the issue with her and make sure she understands the purses are high level uber-luxury items that generally retail for $1000 or more. Unless she thinks you’re rolling in it most reasonable kids would not ask for such a “present” that expensive, especially for what amounts to a clothing accessory you can buy for 1/10th (or less) the price. Things with higher average price ranges like cars are computers are exceptions.
Yeah, sorry for the braino.
The thing about selling (and buying) counterfeits is this - totally aside from the fact it’s trafficking in counterfeit goods, and is a Federal crime): although there are many high quality counterfeit purses, most of them are crap, cheap stiff vinyl, mis-printed, details all wrong, glued instead of stitched, and generally going to fall apart in a couple of months at best. Now how much would you pay?
Worse, most of them come from China or Indonesia, where there are no laws against child labor, and no way to know where the money is going. I’ve read, but can’t substantiate, that much of the money winds up funneled to terrorist groups.
I bet the OPs daughter has only seen such a purse - maybe in a magazine, where prices are often not given - and loves the look. But there are many ‘designer inspired’ purses with similar looks, which do not bear the trademarked logo (and thus are not counterfeits), made of good materials, and totally worth the $50 or so they cost. Might be worth looking into them. You know, Payless Shoes has a line of really neat trendy purses that might work for her, if it’s only the look she wants?
Eh, that’s a bit urban legendish. Most of the good counterfits come from Hong Kong or Korea and they used skilled craftsmen (who, admittedly probably make less than their counterparts in Europe) not slave labor. The uber cheap copies you buy on the street, on the other hand, are probably made in factories, but the factories probably aren’t any worse than the factories that churned out those ultra cheap purses you find at Payless.
A cheap purse won’t last you more than a season before the lining rips and it starts looking shoddy. Is your daughter looking for a good purse that will last? (is it a graduation gift? Coach bags are great graduation gifts as theyre perfect “career” handbags). Mama Zappa mentioned Coach handbags which, though a little above your stated price limit, are excellent bags and will last years with a little bit of maintenance.
Handbags tend to get a lot of wear and tear (since they’re carried everywhere) and, if you get a classic style, it may be worth investing in something a little more expensive. But if you just want the latest trendiest bag and think you’ll want a new one next season, get a cheaper copy. My bag is a copy of the Hermes Birkin (copy, not a counterfit) I bought from Hong Kong for about $150. It’s excellent quality and still looks almost new despite three years of constant use.
