In central Pennsylvania, many old houses, especially those connected with local history (town library, historical society), have their first floor shutters painted white while their upper-floor shutters are painted green. I was told that this custom was brought there by the German settlers.
Anyone know anything more about this tradition? Is it a traditional? How did it begin? Is it common in Germany?
