My condolances as well. I recently had to put down one of my cats, Uhura. The responses in that thread touched me as well. Sisko, my new kitten is a bundle of joy, but now I’m gonna wonder when I get him neutered in a few months. The people at the hospital where Uhura was put down sent me a very nice condolance card. I was touched.
Spider Woman - My mare had melanoma. Apparently the hormone changes of pregnancy made it active. It was growing in her haunch, and blocking the vagina. The vet noticed the cancer growing a month after she was bred, and almost 10 months later I thought we had a chance for the foal, which would have to be delivered by cesarean. She went into labor about 2 weeks before we thought she’d be due, and the baby couldn’t come out. By the time the vet got there, (just minutes after he was called) the baby was dead and she was down. There was no choice but to put her down. It was very hard, having made it to the final weeks of pregnancy. My vet was wonderful, though. He called vets all over the country trying to find effective treatments, he performed surgery at very minimal cost to me, made trips out to see her without charging me anything for his time or for the phone calls. I have a great deal of respect for equine vets, more than for most small animal vets. They really seem to care about the horses and owners.

I’m so sorry about your mare and baby.
My sister’s pony had had three eye surgeries, and if she thought it would have saved Dolly, she would have had another one. Her vets were all wonderful too, and made lots of house calls.
Thanks for your kind words, Weirddave.I am sorry to hear about Uhura. What did she look like? And what is your new kitten’s name?
