My phone has been pestering me to download an update, but insists on using wifi to do it. I don’t have wifi at home, or anywhere else besides work. I don’t need it. I have an unlimited data plan. I have to keep telling it to leave me alone and to remember to start the update as soon as I get to work because our wifi is snail-slow and it takes a couple hours, damnit. If I can figure out a way to make it forget it needs wifi, I can get it done in minutes using 4G. Damnit.
My google-fu is weak when it comes to techy stuff. The only solutions (that I can find) appear to be based in rooting, which I won’t do because I’m not techy enough to be comfortable with it. So I’m asking here if anyone knows, or if I’m hoping for the impossible.
I had to look around to find it:
Go to the Play Store
Hit the little = button at the top (top left on my phone) that brings up a drop down menu.
Click Settings
Click Auto Update
Change it from “Auto Update apps over wifi only” to “auto update apps at any time, data charges may apply”
AT&T. If there’s a way around it, they’re not telling. The couple articles I’ve found also say AT&T is requiring wifi and not giving advise on any way around it.
On preview - Thanks Joey P, this isn’t an app though, I already have those switched to data and still have to override from time to time. This is an update to Lollipop, so it’s coming direct from AT&T I guess, and not the Play Store. Boo.
Hmmm, I’m glad they’re finally sending it down, I’ve been clicking that update button for months.
FTR, even if you did get charged for data, you probably wouldn’t get charged for an OS update, at least with Verizon, they don’t count that against you.
You could try turning wi-fi off, but I don’t know if that’s going to work. I know once in a while my phone won’t even attempt to check for an update if it’s not connected to a wifi network.
I don’t know where you searched, but I use AndroidCentral when I have questions. Here’s the forum for your phone, you might want to see if anyone has asked about it before.
ETA, you might also just see if there’s an open network you can latch onto near your house just to grab the update.
Thanks for that link, I’ll bookmark it! I found an article by them but not the forums. Honestly I start to read search results and click on a few things and when I don’t find what I’m looking for within 4 or 5 tries, my eyes start to cross and a buzzing sound starts in my head (kind of like when I’m faced with math) and I can only look through so much for what I need before I have to stop.
When I click on “continue” at the update notification screen, it says “connect to wifi” and no other choice. I’m never connected to wifi - because I just don’t use it. Last time I think was for the KitKat update, same thing with no choice. When I do a big backup every couple months, the first time I did it I tried over work wifi and it took hours to get through the first gig. I switched to data and the next three gigs took just a few minutes. Everybody around here has wifi locked down. I would have to make friends with a neighbor or buy a coffee and hang out at a shop for however long their possibly just as slow wifi takes. It’s easiest just to connect at work and let it take however long it takes while I work. Just sucks if I forget to do it without a couple hours left to work!
The update to Lollipop is close to 1GB and AT&T is not allowing updates over cellular. If you can’t/don’t want to use Wi-Fi, you will have to connect your phone to a pc and use Samsung’s Kies software to do the update. There will be an option to check and upgrade firmware.
