The goal isn’t to get rid of undocumented workers, it’s to persecute brown people. Immigrant or not. Brutality and fear will accomplish that, not going after harvesters.
For those that don’t know, E-Verify is a system where employers log into a government website, provide them with the information from the new hire’s I-9 documents, and the government determines if they’re authorized for employment.
If an employer doesn’t use E-Verify, they simply fill out an I-9 form with the information off the documentation the employee provides and file it away. They don’t even necessarily make a copy of the documents used for I-9 purposes. And when those I-9s are filed away, very often nobody comes back to look at them. We used E-Verify, but I worked with I-9s for about seven years and not once did the Department of Homeland Security ever audit us. So in a lot of states, there are employers who do a half-assed job with the I-9s knowing the liklihood of the government ever running an audit is very low.
I suspect there’s a lot of fraud not just from candidates but from employers as well. Particularly at companies that rely on a lot of migrant labor, like Tyson chicken, I expect whoever is doing their I-9s looks the other way when presented with questionable documentation. i.e. Maybe a new hire shows up with a copy of their Social Security Card or birth certiciate instead of the original or they use an expired driver’s license.
Trumpers think the country will go back to the way it was.

It’s a myth. And those who put that man in office bit the hook and swallowed.
