I would like this one no matter what because he is from my home area but this very talented young black guy shocked the judges on the X-Factor to much acclaim.
He is a 17 year old dressed like the Fresh Prince of Bel Air but he sings a very unstereotypical song like no one else can to universal acclaim. The crowd reaction gives me hope for America.
What’s so weird about that? Music has passed back and forth between whites and blacks for centuries. Ray Charles had big Country hits and Charlie Pride made a whole career of it. I’m glad this kid has taken it up but aside from his costume (sweet fade!) it seemed very nice and fairly normal.
ETA: Oh, and utterly commercial. Kid knows what’s selling and what will keep selling for decades. Li’l Wayne? Not so much.
Mediocre singer in “fake shock” shock. The X factor does this all the time. When they have dozens and dozens of moderately talented people they have to manufacture some degree of interest from somewhere.
In a similar vein, check the audition of Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr - a 36 year old carwasher who has never auditioned for anything. He comes out chewing gum on stage.

At the age of nine, Lil Wayne joined Cash Money Records as the youngest member of the label, and half of the duo, The B.G.‘z, with B.G.

They didn’t call him **Lil’ **for nothing.
Darius “Hootie” Rucker has made a good run of it as a Country Western singer. I’m happy for him.
I’m really impressed with Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano. Japanese father, Swedish citizenship, sings like Erykah Badu. She brings it strong on this song. Just a cool example of how music can destroy all pre-conceptions.
He was a good singer, but it was painful watching the judges try to find a way to say, “We didn’t know a black guy could sing country!” without actually saying the word “black.”
