Abandonded pet rat after owner dies

Do animal shelters take in pet rats as a matter of course?

When a pet owner dies and there are no relatives or heirs, I know the likely state-mandated fate for their dogs and cats is an animal shelter. What if they had a pet rat? Will animal control typically take those to a shelter too and try to place them, or is a different fate more likely?

I vote for “different fate” unless the RMCA steps in

When I worked at a shelter (Humane Society) we had several small rodents and bunnies that were brought in because the owner died or was hopitalized. I suppose it depends on who finds the animal.
