Abandoned book series you wish would get finished

I wish K.M. Peyton would write more books in her Flambards series. I want to know how Christina and Mark’s relationship plays out and I long to meet Isabel, Christina’s daughter by William, as a grown-up.

Chtorr fans, according to Gerrold’s site he’s still working on the fifth book and number six is already sold. The seventh book is also in the works. He says that he doesn’t know when he’ll actually finish it, but the fact that he’s financially obligated at this point should help light a fire under his ass. I’m going to have to read some of these books since so many people seem to like them.

I’m waiting for the next book from Heather Gladney to come out. Teot’s War and Bloodstorm were very well done Fantasy with hints of SF. I liked them because she put her characters, especially Naga Teot, through physical and emotional hell and wasn’t afraid to make the relationships between the main characters nice and complicated.

She’s reportedly at work on the third book, but the last time I tried to find out what was going on with it (2005) she said mostly the same thing on a message board catering to authors and fans of their work. It has been 18 years since Bloodstorm came out.

I want to read those Gladney books, but they are hell to find. Amazon has 3 used copies of Teot’s War - starting at $78CAD. cry

That is a problem with some of these decent, but not bestseller books. Somebody really ought to do something about the horribly disorganized, and apparently wasteful and inefficient business practices in the publishing industry. Fans always seem to be lusting after books that did exist but are out of print, and authors and publishers both are missing out on not satisfying unfulfilled demand.

I bought my copies of Gladney’s books about ten years ago when you still had to scour used book stores in person to find things. Until Meisha Merlin started reprinting and publishing new books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, I looked in vain for the first of the three Liaden books that were printed in the 80s. I bought Agent of Change new and found Carpe Diem later, but never got my hands on Conflict of Honors. I’m pretty pleased that I can buy all of them in regular paperback or other bindings now.

I’ve been trying to get some books by A.J. Quinnell for years. Most of his later stuff has been listed on the internet for upwards of US$100 since I’ve known of him. I thought I’d finally found Black Horn, but it seems like the Amazon-Japan affiliate was jerking me around; the order has been delayed twice since I placed it.

Am I the only one who wants Rosenberg to finish the Guardians of the Flame series?

Karl Cullinane is Alive!

Meh. The first couple of books were great, with a unique feel to them. But since then they’ve fallen, I think, into fairly standard cookie-cutter fantasy. I read “The Warrior Lives” a couple of years ago and nothing about it really sticks out in my mind, unlike “The Sleeping Dragon”, which I still have vivid pictures of in my memory.

The Merrywell Trilogy by Charlotte Lawrence. I actually know her - I can’t wait for the last book to be published. I have the other two (The Rag Bone Man and The Holographic Dollhouse).

David Wingrove’s Chung Kuo series…

I really enjoyed the later books, Not Exactly The Three Musketeers and its follow ups. I have enjoyed most of the stuff Rosenberg writes, he does a good job of looking at things from different angles. Lawrence Watt-Evans is the same. I wish his Ethshar stuff sold better so he could keep writing it.

Personally, I’d really like to read A Dance With Dragons by George R. R. Martin. :stuck_out_tongue:

To be fair, I don’t think A Song of Ice and Fire has been abandoned by any means. But I was so hopeful when A Feast For Crows finally came out, and the afterward sounded so optimistic about getting back on schedule for the next book, since a lot of it was (supposedly) already written…

I’d also like to see Neil Gaiman finish his run on Miracleman.

I thought that was finished - it’s just that the last book was so appallingly bad that it went out of print quickly.

Is there any news?

Briefly, the latest news is that GRRM is still working on it, and since he’s (by his own admission) continually not meeting his own expectations as far as timing, he’s not going to make any further progress reports until the book is done.

www.westeros.org is a good resource for more detailed information, as well as discussions of the preview chapters that have been read at various gatherings.

I actually came in here to mention that. It was by Barbara and Scott (I think?) Siegel

Sure woulda been nice to have that one done!

One came out in 2005, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Did you read that one?

You’ll be glad to know Colleen McCullough is finishing up her *Masters of Rome series * with Queen of Beasts. I can’t find a publication date though.

Count me in for the *Earth Children * series. Yes, the last book was dreck. But finish it up already (did you hear her nephew was arrested for rape?)

About a year ago jgoddess started a thread on “Stories halted due to death” in which I mentioned the Planetfall series. Based on the popular Infocom game of the same name, the series started with Planetfall, continued with Stationfall, then promised Futurefall without ever delivering.

I’m still waiting.

Between this thread and this thread, I’m going to find and install Planetfall and play it again…

I loved Planetfall the game… sigh

Couple of manga series (I don’t know if they have actually written more or not but I can’t find them in the stores yet): Case Closed series and Dramacon by Svetlana who is Russian born, living in the US, drawing anime and manga (go figure). Hurry up with Dramacon because I am waiting for the second volume!

A continuation of the alice series but carroll is dead. He kind of tied up sylvi and bruno with the second book though so I don’t think I could get another book if i tried if he was alive.

Kerry Greenwood hurry up and write the next book about Phryne Fisher (glamourous flapper detective in Melbourne in the 1930s) and Terry Pratchett I have lost track of whether I read Wintersmith or not - could you alternate with the main characters in each Discworld book so I can keep track much more easily? And finish making money already.

And why would anyone want Jordan to keep writing Wheel of Time - aren’t there over 100 books in that series already? I would like McCafferey to rewrite the dragon rider series but leave 4, 5, and 6 with menolly untouched - I read those and then the rest of the series somehow fell flat.

Nope, he’s dead. Dead dead. All the way dead. Not coming back. No do-overs. Itty-bitty pieces of Karl are all over the beach at Melawei. The Warrior does not live.

Joel Rosenberg used to have a direct answer in his FAQ about this but seems to be much more into the concealed carry permit thing than in hosting stuff about his writing. That fan site has a lot of info, but it’s not necessarily up to date, which is why they point you to his FAQ for a direct answer even though it’s not there. Poke around more, you’ll see that pretty much everyone knows and takes it for granted that Karl’s gone.

I also think that the recent books are not as good as the first run. That’s partially a consequence of having real consequences for your characters and putting them through the wringer. They turn up dead, crippled, old, whatever, and the dynamics change. Also, three (plus one) anti-heroes are harder to sell than a small group of reluctant heroes. He also doesn’t seem to have the passion or interest that he had in that world before. It’s been a long time for him, over 20 years since he started, he’s probably a bit bored. I don’t think we’re ever going to get a definitive answer to the Jason/Deighton thing. If we do, that’s going to be the end of the series, I think. He might be going toward that now that Jason is directly connected with the three [del]stooges[/del] [del]musketeers[/del] companions.

ohhhh me too dammit. In fact, Clive, can you just write some more and soon?

That’s exactly right. Who is the Far Being and why is is interested in this earth lad? What did happen with the gastropod? What’s a Flinger to do? I’m really flummoxed because he told me that fift book is written (has been for over a decade) and goes unpublished. GRR
