I got turned on to ABBA from a Burger King Giveaway 45 record of all things. The song was Fernando, by the way, still one of my favorites.
It may have been a Swedish foreign exchange student in high school, or a friend of a friend in L.A.; but a Swedish person said, ‘♫ Money, money, money… ♫ We hate them.’
I’m sure it would be like if the entirety of American music was defined by Taylor Swift and that was all anybody else knew about it. Everyone on the planet has known ABBA for 40 years, how many people could pick out, say, Yngwie Malmsteen from a crowd?
FWIW, this was 35 years ago, so ABBA was still popular here.
… and presumably will interrupt it a dozen times for pledge breaks.
I read an ABBA biography called Bright Lights, Dark Nights and it explored that whole Swedish resentment of success and wealth. Kind of baffling those of us in America, where worshipping wealth and fame is the national religion.
I remember the song Money, Money, Money, but I never listened to what it’s about. I wasn’t an ABBA fan back then, and I don’t listen to them now.
