FYI to anyone interested. This notice was posted in the Skeptic’s Dictionary newsletter, quoting a request in Michael Shermer’s E-Skeptic newsletter…
I e-mailed him three days ago, and never heard back.
I don’t belive it.
I e-mailed him and said “Thank God I’m an Atheist”.
I also said I had faith he would contact me.
It’ll probably take him awhile to get through the 14,075,000 - 28,150,000 respondants.
Be patient.
He has 500 and I just hung up the phone with him.
He called me ten mins after my first post above.
Oh, he said he was using a couple of my quotes (15-20 min convo) and that the piece would be up in a couple of weeks, and he’d e-mail me the link and notice.
Philster, I’m surprised. I was skeptical that this was for real. Good job getting through to this guy.
So, he’s already pretty much written it and doesn’t need any more sources? Guess I won’t be hearing from him, then. Be sure to give us the link, too!
Just tell him to come read the SDMB! He’ll get all the info he needs in GD!
I’ll keep you informed should I hear anything.
If your curious, here’s what I e-mailed him after reading the OP for this thread:
"Someone told me you wanted to interview non-believers, but I didn’t believe it.
I am an atheist trying to maintain relationships with Jews and Catholics who are good friends. We often struggle with our opinions and beliefs, and it affects everything from my personal life to my career.
It’s an interesting dilemma, and one that tests my child rearing abilities, among others.
I would love to be interveiwed. I have faith you’ll give me a holler!

90-95% That number doesn’t sound right. Hmm…gotta love “opinion polling.” I expect the question was something like "Do you like cake?*
- (very small print) And also believe in God."
belief in God: At skepdic.com, I think the real number is listed at somewhere between 60-70%, and members of Scientific America believe at a 15-20% rate.

From Skepdic.com :
How widespread is atheism? A worldwide survey in 2000 by the Gallup polling agency found that 8% do not think there is in any spirit, personal God, or life force. Another 17% are not sure. However, more than half the world’s population, and more than 90% of the world’s scientists, do not believe in a personal God, and hence would be considered atheists by many Christians.
Interesting.
I would love to be interviewed for something like this.
I like the idea, but I’m very afraid for how this might turn out. I really want to see the finished product to make sure it’s not something like “After 9/11, almost all of America turned to God. But some wacky folks don’t think there’s a God at all!”
I guess the cynic (and Simpsons fan) in me is showing through.
