Everyone seems to be having arguements about fetal viability time limits, if Constitution allows Abortion etc, but what if that isnt the arguement to be made at all? Has anyone ever framed Abortion as a self defence issue, as in do you have the Constitutional right to defend yourself from another person that latches onto you and sucks your blood and excretes into your blood against your will? We have an established Constitutional right to self defence, has this ever been argued that this right could or should apply? Also Property Rights arguement. If we have the right to change our minds and determine a person is no longer welcome in our home, even if invited, and they are considered illegal tresspassers once they are no longer welcome. If you have this property right for your house, shouldnt you have this same property right for a womb? This completly renders issues of viability and “personhood” of fetues irrelevant and in fact treats them as persons just like any other unwelcome intruder. Have these arguments been made and rejected by high Courts?
I view it as a slavery issue.
Look, you can say “keep it, and just place it up for adoption” however there are a bunch of caveats -
Cost of pregnancy - even if the woman has decent insurance, the cost of a normal pregnancy through delivery is: [median cost]
- Vaginal with no complications — $10,958
- Vaginal with complications — $13,010
- Cesarean with no complications — $18,570
- Cesarean with complications — $21,704
[add in prenatal vitamins, the woman’s food and shelter, transportation to and from appointments, clothing, um - JOB. I worked in several hazardous fields, I would have had to find a new job that wouldn’t put me in danger - which might have cost me my insurance access]
Complications of a pregnancy:
Some common complications of pregnancy include, but are not limited to, the following.
High Blood Pressure
Gestational Diabetes
Infections
Preeclampsia
Preterm Labor
Depression & Anxiety
Pregnancy Loss/Miscarriage
Stillbirth
Severe, persistent nausea and vomiting
Iron-deficiency anemia
Problems that can persist after the pregnancy ends:
A 2017 review of studies found that women with gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and preterm delivery had higher risks of heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
So, let me get on with a potentially fatal condition with the man that ‘helped’ me get this way then bailed out with NO issues, no financial support, not a care in the world, while if I miscarry or have an accident that ends the pregnancy can get slammed with murder and go to jail. Forcing a woman to be a walking womb so some man can get his rocks off is effective slavery. Only difference is this time around, he can act sweet and supportive, the perfect boyfriend, then after getting his rocks off, dump me leaving me forced to gestate his spawn.
And yes I know it takes two to tango - but it doesn’t seem particularly fair that half the pair gets off scot free just by walking away.
