about chocolate and dogs

Ummm who keeps over a pound of chocolate laying around. (lol don’t answer that, fat America might) My dog ate a whole bag of Hershey’s kisses and the only mal-effect she had was pooping out foil wrappers which I’m sure was not pleasant. From what my vet told me grapes are the food to avoid giving dogs. She said this is due to an enzyme or something that causes renal failure in low doses. Also, she did live to be 15 (my dog not the vet), so to me that rules out any long term side effects as this happened when she was about 3 or 4.

PS
This was a response to a column dated in 97’ as I read it again. :smack:

Welcome to the SDMB, dolemke.

A link to the column you’re commenting on is appreciated. Providing one can be as simple as pasting the URL into your post, making sure to leave a blank space on either side of it. Like so: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1153/is-chocolate-toxic-to-dogs

On CBC Radio’s science show Quirks & Quarks a few Saturdays ago, they addressed “is chocolate poison to dogs?” The answer was yes. Some dogs may be less affected by it–the size of the dog has a great deal to do with that, but it is not good for dogs at all. It’s not good for cats, either, but cats don’t seem to go for sweet things like dog do.

Are you referring to America Ferrera? She’s not that fat. (And it’s “lying around”. Welcome to the Dope!)

Speak for yourself. I have some really easy chocolate at my digs.

I think he’s non-American and poking fun at our national weight problem, not a specific person.

My dog once managed to get into my candy stash the day after Halloween, and ate most of it. Fortunately, he was fine, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a total of a pound of chocolate in there.

Is this the column in question?
