I’m converting over to Star office and have run into a mess
so once again I turn to the teeming millions for a bit of
advice:
When using Star Office must you always convert
your Micro$oft files (with the auto pilot) first OR
is there a way to associate Micro$oft file extensions
with Star Office, so that when you click on them
They are opened/converted automatically.
we have many gigs of Micro$oft Office files
and converting them is gonna be real pain in the
patukus!
It would help if you told us what operating system you were using. You have not given anyone sufficient information to answer the question in any more detail.
Could it be that no-one around here either knows about or uses Star Office? I have heard of it, but I don’t use it, hence I am in no postion to offer any solutions to your dilemma.
The easiest way to do this on a windows machine is this:
Single click on a Word document.
Now, right click on the SAME document, and you should get a context menu.
Select “Open with…”
Browse for the StarOffice executable, and select it. After selecting StarOffice, check the box that says “always use this program to open this type of file.”
Click OK (or finish, or whatever).
Now, StarOffice will always be used for *.doc files. You can repeat this for excel files, etc.
First of all, THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT, I have
tested these ideas and they seem to be the answer
to my question.
Sorry about not giving enough info on the computers:
they are various Frankenstein machines ranging from
Pentium 1 - 90 mhz through Pentium 3 -850mhz we have a total
of 15 machines on a network using NT (forget the version
but its about 3 years old)

As for getting what you pay for: We are a Diagnostic
medical clinic located in São Paulo Brazil. Using
15 versions of windows 9xx and 8 copies of office
has some costs - especially when 1 Brazilian Real
is worth about 40 cents. Now the software police tell
us that if we don’t “normalize” or relationship with
Micro$oft in the next 30 days we will be liable for
up 1000 times the licence fee for each copy…IN U.S. DOLLARS!
Hmmm lets see, one copy of windows 150.00 (U.S.)15 times
is $2250.00 and 8 copies of Office at 550.00 (U.S.) is
$4400.00. Total= $6650.00 times the current exchange
rate of R$2.47… GEEEEpers that’s R$16,425.00
just to “normalize” - forget the fine.
To bad this represents about 10% of our net worth.
Of corse, we could send a few employees back to the
favella (shanty town), after all one Windows 9xx licence
is worth about one months salary, OR, we could tell the
poorer folks “sorry we cant treat your children, we have
to pay for our soft ware”, OR, we could do the socially
responsible thing and find a solution that doesn’t have
so much direct cost associated with it - hence
Star Office.

I’m sure the advice provided below is exactly what
I needed and once again I wish to say THANK YOU ALL!
using microsofts file extention/assotiation
feature doesnt work because I cant seem to find
the *.exe for Star office, its not listed as
an option in the file view area eather…
Look at the properties of the short cut you use to fire up Star Office, which will tell you what it runs. It is a Java-based GUI. It probably executes by executing “java” with the appropriate arguments, or some wrapper script that invokes java.
I use it occasionaly on a Solaris environment. For Windows, I use MS Office. Java GUI’s still aren’t as finely tuned as the native window managers on the various platforms.
Used copies of Windows 95/98 and MS Office are available individually on E-bay for much less than the prices you quoted unless you need the Brazilian specific versions of these packages.
Re finding the .exe for star office use the find feature in windows and have it look for *.exe. It should tag the executable and show you the location.
Yabob: That sounds like the ticket, when I look in the
initial Star office Directory I find some bizar file
extentions that could be connected to the JRE (or something) When Im done posting this I will give it go
and let ya know! THANX!
Astro: WOW what a GREAT IDEA! yes the copies need
to be in Portuguese, however there are acution sites
here in Brazil as well, scuse me while I wipe the ice cream
off my forhead - I hadn’t thought of that - THANX!
Creat a Star Office file. Since you are having trouble finding files, save it to an empty directory.
Close Star Office. Use explorer to look in the directory. Write down the name of the file extension.
Double click the file name to test that Star Office does open with that document. Close Star Office.
In Windows 98 use Windows help [from the Start button], not Explorer’s help. Look up “extensions”. It will tell you how to change the program associated with the extension.
Follow the instructions. Look up the extension you found in Step 2. Edit the extension. Edit the “open” property. Look to see what program is used to run it. [On my computer it is soffice.exe]. Write down the name and extension of the program. It should be an .exe
Use Explorer or Windows to search for that program. Be sure to type in both the program name and extension. Write down the path.
Follow the instructions from Step 4. Select the Microsoft extension you want to change. Change the program for “open” to the program found in Step 4. [Use brouse and find it at the location found in Step 6.]
That was very detailed thank you for your time!
I have printed this out and will give it a try
then let you all know where I’m at -
again thank you all!
