Keep in mind that based on the Iranian testimony it sounds like the survivors were in a life boat already, because they were the sailors who heeded the multiple American warnings and abandoned the ship.
If those reports are confirmed, that really sinks (pun very much intended) almost all the nonsense accusations that were lobbed around in this thread.
There is, so far as I am aware, no such testimony. The claim that Charlotte warned it is a vague claim allegedly from the family of an alleged sailor on the ship who might or might not now be dead. It’s also ridiculous to think the Captain was continuing on with his mission while people were taking to lifeboats. Try getting into a lifeboat while the ship you’re on is doing twenty knots.
That’s cool. Have you taken even one second to scan over the information I shared concerning actually adjudicated war-crimes trials regarding Nazi sub commanders? No, you haven’t because nobody has, because you’d rather faff around with “some experts believe.” Sure, there are different opinions, but actually adjudicated cases will tell you how things are likely to go.
And equally there is expert support for the fact that this can be compromised by arguments of military expediency – if you’re simply not militarily able to rescue, then you can justify not doing so, especially if other rescue is available. Subs have greater justification here because they simply lack the capacity, and Dena was not very far from Sri Lankan and Indian military assets. Please do not be a moron and infer that I’m approving of what they did, I’m laying out what the defense would be and why it would succeed.
Many people in this thread are expressing opinions like, maybe the sub should’ve given a fair warning before attacking. That’s police rules of engagement, not any kind of military ROE. Or that maybe the crew should’ve had some sort of presumption of innocence. Maybe this ship of the Iranian Navy (which is currently threatening civilian traffic and mining the straits of Hormuz) really weren’t such bad guys, maybe they weren’t armed, maybe they were conscripts. That’s purely police-encounter thinking. This isn’t George Floyd.
Because the UCMJ isn’t the fucking law of war, you mouth-breathing idiot, and could not conceivably be used to color this case as a “war crime”. It’s an irrelevant red herring.
You always have the option of fucking off into outer space if you don’t like it, but hopefully the above explanation has fully demonstrated why I have no interest in engaging with your sealioning bullshit. It shows motivated reasoning, a poor grasp of the cites, and a general unfamiliarity with the material. I would have to educate you before debating you and I see little potential for improvement.
I could make a snarky response here reminding you that if you’re sensitive about being exposed to assholery, then you’re really in the wrong forum. Everybody and everything looks like a punching bag in the Pit. Generally it’s why people come here, because the board has recognized the need for a space where different rules of engagement obtain.
But, it sounds like you are processing some authentic human distress about Trump attacking your country (I assume Canada) which is an understandable sensitivity and doesn’t really deserve to be attacked. The Pit doesn’t prohibit that, but it also doesn’t require it either. So if that’s the situation, then I apologize for distressing you.
I don’t really care if presenting my opinions forcefully makes people think I’m an asshole, and I don’t mind smacking down stupidity when I see it, but I do want to be fair and not pile onto people who are genuinely and justifiably personally afraid about the circumstances.
Yes, a point I was about to make earlier. The Pit can be a fine place for wide-ranging discussions with relatively little moderation, and we’ve had some very good and informative discussions here over the years, with the occasional snark and insult thrown in. But the lack of restrictions does tend to bring out the True Asshole just because there are no immediate consequences.
Oh, fuck right off with that. Considering the US is blowing up oil refineries, water desalination plants, and little girls essentially unprovoked and despite ongoing negotiations (Pearl Harbor style), merely threatening civilian traffic and mining the strait could be considered a measured response by comparison.
And, as yet another reminder, there is a difference between the IRN and the IRGCN. And considering I had to educate you on that the first time you put your foot in your mouth, I am not sure any of us cn trust your analysis here. Because in general, the activities you describe (disrupting commercial shipping in the littorals around Iran) are typically within the scope of the IRGCN, not the IRN.
Cute game, but the “How to Play” tab is remarkably uninformative and assumes you already know how to play minesweeper. All it explains is the controls.
I had to google “How to Play Minesweeper” to understand the point of the game.
You are whatabouting the targeting of neutral uninvolved countries by Iran, which has its own list of human-rights atrocities that dwarfs most other nations in the region in the world, so you can fuck right back off into outer space with your bullshit. If you know about Iran’s atrocities, fuck you. If you don’t, fuck you even more. You see where I’m going with this.
Nobody gives a fuck about the opinion of someone who is white-knighting for an oppressive pariah state as a leg up to score points on a pariah administration.
You’re willing to defend Iran targeting the shipping uninvolved neutral countries, just to get in a dig at Trump or me or whatever daddy issues are causing this poor posting impulse control that allowed you to admit this in your outside voice. And justifying it by milking out the last drops of joy off some increasingly irrelevant point of fact you happened to land 5 days ago? Really, step back and take a good long look at yourself here.
In fairness, the classic Minesweeper experience is to click around on the board until you figure out why you keep exploding. There was a help file available, but I don’t know anyone who actually read it.
Of course, it helps to be ~14 and have a lot of spare time and access to your dad’s computer.
