Absolute monster 1970s AM radio hits

The Tubes. They often blew away the headliners, IMO. They could be naughty, though. :stuck_out_tongue:
I dunno if they ever made it to WLS.

Funny, I don’t think I have ever heard this on the radio. There was some K-Tel compilation of hits offered on TV and they always played a snippet of the song. I thought it sounded good.

Much later, I picked up a compilation LP in a used records place while ISO something else, and it was on the disc. I dig it!

Whatever happened to Chi Coltrane? Here’s her site.

Come and Get Your Love - Redbone

Low Rider - War

Why Can’t We Be Friends - War

I Can See Clearly Now(The Rain Is Gone) - Johnny Nash

Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Knight and the Pips

The Joker - Steve Miller Band

Chevy Van - Sammy Johns

Danny’s Song - Kenny Loggins

(Put the Lime in the) Coconut - Harry Nilsson

Tight Rope - Leon Russell

Love Train - The O’Jays

Drift Away - Dobie Gray

Ramblin Man - Allman Brothers Band

Peaked at 17 in '72.

I remember hearing Thunder and Lightning on the radio, and I was listening to WLS back then- that and WCFL. Plus WOKY (Mighty 92!) in Milwaukee.

I always preferred B. J. Thomas’ version of Hooked On A Feeling. I never cared for the ooga-chacka part.

That’s the Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia - Vicki Lawrence

A great sing along song about an execution of an innocent man.

Back Stabbers, The O’Jays

Hmm, I would have been 9 years old. I think I had a clock radio in my room by then, but maybe not.

At any rate, I found this website:

The site is a bit suspect: at #4, the title is “Without You,” mmkay? Also, I always look at these charts and think, ‘Nah, those two couldn’t have been from the same year.’ But assuming it’s more or less correct, dayum, I have to say 72 was a great year for music.

I mean, holy shit: Alone Again, American Pie, Heart of Gold, Lion Sleeps Tonight, Precious and Few, Sunshine, I Can See Clearly Now, Black and White, You Don’t Mess Around with Jim, Anticipation, Never Been to Spain, Day By Day…I remember these getting heavy airplay, in addition to other classics listed being played more moderately. There were only 365 days in 1972, right?

Still, I don’t remember “Thunder and Lightning” at all and I assume it was squeezed out by the others. Or maybe it got heavy play during a time slot when I wasn’t near a radio. At any rate, it must have been a flash in the pan—popular but only for a short time, and that lack of staying power kept it off the chart for the year (in total).

Love Hurts - Nazareth

Dream Weaver - Gary Wright

When I Need You - Leo Sayer

Third Rate Romance - Amazing Rhythm Aces

Carly Simon - “Youre So Vain” (and a Number One song at that)

Here’s a good one.
