ACA and the senior citizen

I am over 65, several chronic conditions, and have been on Medicare for ten years. Will I need more, less or the same supplemental coverage?

AFAIK, the ACA will not change anything for those on Medicare, including your supplemental insurance.

The ACA is aimed at people who don’t have insurance because they can’t afford it (hence the name, “Affordable Care Act”). It actually doesn’t affect a huge percentage of the population, and the firestorm over it is totally disproportionate to its impact.

Medicare coverage is ACA compliant, so you need do nothing at all. If you do want additional coverage, you can look into the supplemental plans, but read the fine print. Some of them are HMO’s, and you’ll be limited to in-network providers. If you’re okay with that, great, but I find that the salespeople aren’t entirely forthcoming with that information, and some of my patients lose my services as a result.
