Thank you.
It has been a standard practice, for years, to move troll threads out of sight. The explanation, that we would prefer to not give them more attention, has been provided throughout that period.
I have never seen a poster chided for asking that a troll thread that had gotten interesting be re-opened. We do not frequently do it, but there has never been a problem with making the request.
How would I find out who the mods are?
Oh, I see you’ve answered that
“you can find out who is assigned to what by clicking “View Forum Leaders” towards the bottom of the main SDMB page.” Is that published somewhat prominent? Is there any way a tapatalk user would be able to figure it out?
Fwiw, I moderate a different forum, and on that forum, the report button is the preferred method of dealing with a problematic post, as well as sending information to all the mods. (Although it can take a while, as there is no “push” notification of reports to any mod.)
It hadn’t occurred to me that y’all prefer pms. Yes, that makes it easier to reply to the initiator, but it makes it harder to discuss the question with other mods. I’d have to copy the whole pm into the mods forum to do that.
Or, look at the message list page for any forum of interest, and scroll down towards the bottom. The mods for that forum are listed there.
I didn’t publicly mention exactly what my complaint was about “that thread”, although I might have hinted about it. I did say, privately in two separate reports to mods, what my complaint was – one report complained about a specific post in the thread, the other report complained about something in the overall play-out of the earlier part of the thread. I didn’t think the mods would tolerate a public discussion.
Yes, I gather from the oblique remarks in the ATMB thread that the original thread went way overboard over-the-top out-of-control, apparently due to the increasing rantiness of the OP and his (multiple apparent) sockses. I myself didn’t see that part of the thread – it was disappeared before I got back to it.
I saw an earlier portion of the thread, before that happened.
The mods have repeatedly pointed out why they close and disappear those threads, and quickly close related threads in ATMB: If the OP is a troll, they don’t want to give him any more play.
Okay, I’ll give a TL;DR of my complaint: The nasty jerkish responses of a great many of the respondents in that thread. You’d have thought they were stoning a leper in ancient Jerusalem. And further, I am complaining that mods sit silently when that happens in threads like that (or occasionally move the thread to the Pit, so the whole world can really pile on the leper). We get threads from time to time from seemingly sex-starved males, and that happens in a great many of them. (A few recent such threads seem to be exceptions, to some extent.) The outpouring of anger, hate, insults, and vitriol is those threads is so thick, you couldn’t cut it with the proverbial knife. A chainsaw, maybe.
The OP did start getting a bit more defensive. Apparently (the part of the thread I didn’t see), he went ballistic, posted some really nasty rants, and allegedly created additional socks to do so. But that all happened later. The bulk of the posts already earlier in that thread were nasty, hostile, and provocative. So who, exactly, was trolling who?
Well, if the whole thread devolved into a trollfest, I can see why you not only closed but also disappeared it. Makes it hard to point out example posts, though. Several mods have noted what you say here, but I haven’t seen any response to the complaint that so many others were acting like jerkish trolls too. So I’m still not convinced that the mods will tolerate any public discussion of that. I expect that I’m pushing the limits with this post itself.
Hmm.
Well, yes, very much. And that other thread was FULL of usually-civil posters doing just that, and not just the OP there.
