According to the cat, there is a demon in the subwoofer!

My mom’s live-in boyfriend bought a new surround sound system and hooked it up in the family room, where we can all enjoy it :smiley:

However, if there’s one family member who does not enjoy the subwoofer unit, it is Buster the cat. Buster acts as if there is something very evil inside. He growls at the subwoofer, and this evening I caught him trying to pry his way inside it, while growley-snarling.

Evidently this subwoofer emits some kind of noise that drives him absolutely batshit. Combined with my mom’s violin playing, its no wonder he’s so neurotic these days :stuck_out_tongue:

Is this a powered subwoofer?

Cats don’t hear as low of frequencies as we do, but they hear a heck of a lot better on the high range. Humans can hear up to about 15 to 20 kHz. Cats can hear up to about 60 to 80 kHz.

Here’s a complete WAG. Your subwoofer has a switching power regulator inside of it to power the amplifier in it, and the cat can hear the vibrations from the regulator’s switching frequency.

If the subwoofer is powered from an amp somewhere else then I’ll have to go with the evil possessed spirit theory instead.

You may be able to power off the subwoofer when not in use. I don’t know it that will help the cats.

You could get Jurrassic Park and run that movie. That keeps my cat out of the room.

My cat also harbors a deep suspicion of the subwoofer. She raises her hackles and leaves the room when I put on bass-heavy movies, like Blade or The Matrix. :smiley:

It’s possible. Hamsters run the Straight Dope search engines, etc. after all.

Well, duh! Cats hate anything that woofs. It’s the language of the enemy.

Another good question would be: Is she afraid of the vacuum? My cat actually stalks the vacuum when I turn it on. Of course, cats are supernatural creatures, so this is par for the course.

<ahem>

Speakers have been known to host vermin.

Mice, for example.

Does it…smell ?

My wife’s cat when she was a girl used to flop on the floor in front of the vacuum and demand to be vacuumed. Our current lot all find urgent business in some other room as soon as we bring the vacuum out.
