Act your race?!

As long as I don’t see your buttcrack, sag your pants all you want.

You don’t have to be black, but you might want to call out your racist friends for being racist assholes. That’s something they need to hear.

There’s a ton of rappers in Spain and Latin America who are most definitely not black. Then again, neither are rappers from France, Romania, Russia or Iceland… it’s a pity I’m completely not up to date on rap in Spanish, but maybe you can look for some and use it to gently hit your pals over the head with it.

This list is old but it could be a starting point. Los violadores del verso are so famous that even I have heard about them…

I don’t get the sagging. It’s the opposite of individuality. it has no point other than to signal that you’re like other people who sag their pants.

Unless, of course, what his friends are really saying is "Dude, your obsessive wholesale adoption of a largely media-constructed “black culture” makes you appear, at best, a hopeless poseur, and, at worst, as if you are in the grip of a powerful self-loathing toward your own personal and cultural identity: as your friends, we feel like your interests are less rooted in genuine taste and more the sign of some misguided attempt to adopt an artificial and foreign identity in order to conceal your own mis-perceived shortcomings.

But everyone involved is 13, so it’s coming out “Dude. You aren’t black. Stop it”.

I think it’s probably some of both, honestly.

Culture naturally diffuses.

People like what they like.

America’s best export–rock music–owes its success to a bunch of white folks daring to fall in love with black culture. How horribly pathetic this country would be if this hadn’t happened.

Why does this black girl wear Tevas on her feet. These aren’t “black” sandals. Outrage!!??

Well, Tevas are perfect for my needs, wants, and desires. In short, I like them.

People adopt aspects of black culture because, well, they like these things. It doesn’t seem so difficult a concept to me.

According to American TV, Hispanics are the only ones who can have sex with both white and black people. So you’ve got that.

If I was black I think I would think the same about white rappers as I do about Elvis presley for co-opting R&B. A musical style that started on the poorer neighborhoods as gone suburban. Think about if a city kid from NYC started singing country songs. Pickup trucks, tractors and Merica. Would some people be understandable be upset by that, or if nothing else consider that person a faker??

Hmm.
I sail, wear polo shirts and khaki chinos, and drink martinis. I probably could not act more “white” without emulating the NASCAR stereotype.

Angel, dress as you like, sing what you like, and act as you wilt (within legal limits, of course).

And everyone else, repeat after me: “We Are All Individuals!” The Non-Conformist League’s sign up sheets, by-laws and guidelines are available in the lobby. You will recognize members by their distinctive standard shirts.

Or a bunch of Spaniards singing songs inspired by spaghetti Westerns? Dunnow, La Frontera actually had a pretty good run. Rockabilly made outside the US (Matchbox, Stray Cats)? Country singers from Australia?

Yeah, le horror, excuse me while I don’t faint.

May be, but it sure won’t hurt those 13-year-olds to hear that it’s obnoxiously racist to tell someone they’re “acting black.” And if someone is adopting a media-constructed black culture, who cares? If that’s what he wants to do that’s his business.

That’s awful. They should tell you to stop letting your pants sag because it’s not 1997!

Wrong part of Asia

Obligatory link to Dave Chappelle’s Racial Draft.

Aaron Copeland pretty much defined the music of the old west, yet lived in NYC.

I once had to remind a roommate that he was white. He was lecturing us on what it’s like to be black, and how we, as white people, would never get it. The other two people in the room were our other roommate and his girlfriend, both black.

I’m Indian, and didn’t want to go to med school or run a motel or convenience store, so I decided to make a film about White Castle.

Wait, there are “black” and “non-black” sandals? I had no idea! I learned something today.

Just to continue my education, what sandals are considered “black”?

But Stringbean Akeman wasn’t Hispanic! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not.

Shodan
