activities with a 1 in 10K chance of death

I’m considering signing up as a potential donor with the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry. Their website is rather short on detail when describing the potential medical complications donors might experience if they are called upon to donate. Thankfully we live in the age of the internet, so I poked around out there for “bone marrow donor complications.”

Turned up a couple of worthy publications. This one surveyed a very large group of donors (51,024) and among other things, concluded that the risk of fatality for a donor is approximately 1 in 10,000. (It’s interesting to note that of the five reported donor fatalities, all five donors were related to their intended recipients.)

For context, can anyone suggest other activities that present a similar (1:10,000) risk of death?

Well it’s more dangerous than skydiving (18 deaths out of 2.5 million jumps) but less dangerous than riding a motorcycle for 1 year (1 fatality per 1388 riders)

Does that help?

Carl Sagan once said that you wouldn’t get onto a commercial airliner if the odds of catastrophic failure of the aircraft were 1 in 100,000. There would be three crashes every week in the world. 1 in 10,000 is roughly the odds of being murdered (in the United States). Which is why I scoff at people who are afraid of flying, but keep my guns handy and well-maintained at all times. You might want to read Risk if you’re interested.
