It was five days ago, but I didn’t see a thread on the guy. He was best known for his starring role on the old TV western “Bronco”, after appearing on “Cheyenne” to fill in when Clint Walker walked off in a huff. He was born Orison Whipple Hungerford, Jr., so I’m sure it was a relief when the studio changed it. The guy had eight wives, including a Miss Universe winner.
Oh my goodness–I absolutely remember him. There were a whole bunch of westerns at the same time… Cheyenne, Sugarfoot (with Steve McQueen before he became really famous), Rawhide (ditto Clint Eastwood), Gunsmoke (which ran for 20 years), The Dakotas, Laramie, Tombstone Territory, Wagon Train, Wichita, The Rifleman, Bonanza… and Bronco. I watched all of them! Ty Hardin was very cute. Another one rides off into the sunset.
Nitpick: Steve McQueen was in Wanted Dead or Alive; Will Hutchins was in * Sugarfoot*.
I remember Bronco and Hardin very well; I liked him better than Cheyenne. (though I preferred * Sugarfoot*). Sad loss.
Not a nitpick at all. You are so right and I stand corrected.
And let’s not forget Nick Adams in “The Rebel”, Richard Boone in “Have Gun, Will Travel”, and James Garner in “Maverick”!
Absolutely! I’ve seen some HGWT recently and they have very much withstood the test of time. Paladin invented the cool, intellectual gunslinger. He’s one of those men who’s not classically handsome (Gene Hackman is one, too), but is so attractive and sexy.
IMDB says, “After his acting career faded away, Ty Hardin became a self-proclaimed “freedom fighter” in the 1970s, and led a radical right-wing group called The Arizona Patriots, an anti-Semitic/anti-immigrant/anti-black group with a penchant for stockpiling weapons and baiting public officials.”
Us that an exaggeration?
I thought it was more about tax evasion, since he got into hot water with the IRS.
