Ad Council's "What if America Weren't America?" ads

I love these ads. I’ve seen two so far, several times on Wednesday. I haven’t seen any since. I think they’re actually called “what if America wasn’t America?” but I switched it to “weren’t.”

In one of them, three harried workers sit down in a diner and one of them starts spouting off his frustration at having to pay taxes. His friends try to calm him down, and the people in the next booth get up and leave, looking uncomfortable. The waitress gives him worried looks. It’s left kind of vague, but the implication is “what if we didn’t have the freedom to criticize the government?”

The other one I’ve seen is a teenager going into a library and handing the librarian a slip of paper with some book titles on it. She looks them up and tells him, “These titles are no longer available.” He asks why. Two guys in suits stand up from a nearby table and approach him, saying they want to ask him a few questions.

I hope they do one about freedom of religion and/or the separation of church and state.

They did Freedom of the Press.

Two cops pull over a kid in a station wagon… press him against the trunk while they search the car. One of the cops finds a newspaper and lifts up the seat and finds a stack of them. He grabs the newspaper looks at the other cop and says, “We got 'im”. Then they start to take the kid off to presumably be arrested.

<shrug>

I guess the ads are kinda neat.

There’s a freedom of religion one. It has people doing your usual church-type activities, but as everyone’s leaving, the preacher warns them to be careful going home. Then you can see the people leaving through a basement door and checking closely to see if anyone’s watching.

I really like the ads as well.
