Ad for Sandals Bahama Resort on TV last night

During Rachel Maddow’s show, no less.

It seems incredibly tactless.

I looked it up, and the resort is on Great Exuma island, which isn’t extremely close to Grand Bahama and Abaco, which were devastated. Still, it must have sustained damage. I realize that they will be needing the business to help rebuild, but running ads now seems ridiculous and possibly insulting.

I thought I saw one of those commercials, but on a different network. My best guess is that they were prepaid with a 'use-it-or-lose-it clause?

Actually, Exuma island was “largely unaffected”. It’s almost 300 miles from Grand Bahama island, and was well outside the tropical force wind area.

And I’m honestly not sure what the problem is running the ads. The Bahamas, as you noted, can certainly use all the tourist dollars they can get to rebuild.

I got a telemarketer call yesterday telling me I won a Bahamas vacation if only I do something…something. I laughed while I hung up.
Don’t they watch the news?

I heard the governor (?) of the Bahamas specifically mention undamaged islands that were the “engine of their economy.” They’re going to need beaucoup bucks to pay for re-building, so I have no qualms about their advertising their resorts.

One assumes the hurricane will be gone before any newly-booked vacations begin. And I’ll be the fourth to point out that the Bahamas can surely use all the tourist dollars they can get after this.

So as long as the resort remains open for business, I don’t see the problem.

Those ads are usually booked and in the queue well in advance, I’m sure no one thought of it
