I thought repeats were disallowed as part of the game?

ETA: it’s not in the rules in the first post, so maybe not. I had always assumed so.

Yeah, I think the opposite assumption of “your rule should disallow your own word” was also unstated, and at one point I did the same procedure of looking at the first post and realizing that there was nothing in the rules that required it.
