ADHD & now AADD

Is ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ,a real disease that can be allegedly treated with Ritalin a cocaine derivitive.

The drug companies are now advertising on TV to suggest you too might suffer from AADD, Adult Attention Deficit Disorder, and that you might benefit from taking (BUYING) their product.

If a drug can “cure” such “diseases” might they not have been caused by the intake of other drugs/stuff before symptoms became apparent.

Consider that all too many children and adults subsist on a diet heavily weighted toward soft drinks which are laced with caffeine and sugar. Some of the newer versions have two to three times the caffeine and sugar content!

What say ye?

I say, my kids don’t pay anywhere near the attention to me when I speak that they should. They must suffer from Adult Attention Deficit Disorder.

I might direct you to the many other threads in this forum and others on the subject.

In brief, there is no evidence linking ADHD with diet, and no evidence that a change in diet can alleviate symptoms. The keys to treatment are behavioral modification and medications, neither of which is very helpful without the other. (The drug you saw advertised was probably Strattera, or atomoxetine, which is a new, non-stimulant medication.)

I know that my life is immeasurably better since I began treatment for ADHD (as an adult, five years ago). I don’t know why so many people seem so keen to take that away from me.

ADHD is not a disease, it is a condition.

However, to continue your analogy:
Is pain a real disease that can be allegedly treated with morphine, an opium derivative?

If a drug can “cure” such “diseases” might they not have been caused by the intake of other drugs/stuff before symptoms became apparent.

(I’m pretty sure that instead of using morphine, we can simply prevent people from incurring trauma so that they do not need to be “cured” of pain.)
