Is there an adjective form of bowdlerize?
As Sternvogel said, Nicholas Chauvin was supposed to have served in the French Army under Napoleon, and practically worshiped the guy; chauvinistic meant more or less obsession with the virtue and superiority of a person or concept, and male chauvinism is a slight modification of that.
I must admit I missed that, even though I scanned the posts a couple of times.
