And me. I usually log out after I’m done reading/posting since staying logged in causes issues with AOL and other “log in” locations I use. So as soon as I hit the SDMB I’m hit with one or two pop-unders. I sign in and do my thing; OK. And after I log out I get hit with one or two more.
Add my name to the list of those who aren’t real thrilled about this.
I thought I was doing something wrong because I’m getting an occasional full page ad too. That’s bad enough, but when you try to close it you get that “are you sure you want to close this page” message. I totally distrust that option and resort to Ctrl W just to be safe. I’m betting there are a few visitors who leave this place after getting those ads and never return because of it.
If only there were a way for the owner of a website to track usage before and after implementing new advertising plans.
But when I come to the Dope, and before I log in, that damn thing pops under!!
Sites that do this should be nuked from orbit and burned with fire.
If TPTB@SDMB want to have pop-unders that’s bad enough. But demand some kind of quality control over those ads! Ads that don’t close politely when you try to close them are right up there with pr0n ads and anti-Obama political rants on the unacceptability scale.
We have had problems in the past with ads that fire up self-starting videos and ads with malware and other problem ads. TPTB always assure us that they are working with their ad vendors to prevent stuff like that. Are TPTB not doing the same with these new styles of ads, at least to prevent some of the anti-social behavior being cited here?
I just wanted to point out he’s not a moderator, he has a custom title that says “moperator”, as in “one who mopes”.

And people like me who are rethinking “Why am I paying?”. Those “confirm you really want to leave” things are like salt in an open wound.
I understand the internet isn’t free and the board needs to generate funds but this could just be one step too far. IMHO.
Quite frankly, I’m pretty reluctant to reccomend this place to anyone. And I used to share threads with people, if I thought the topic was amusing. I won’t do that anymore, because I don’t want to be responsible for someone possibly getting their computer infected – not everyone uses adblockers.
That’s something the higher ups should seriously be thinking about.
Popunders are yet another reason anyone on the internet should be using ad blockers.
Just as an FYI, as I was doing my own testing to see if being logged in made a difference or not. It doesn’t! Not for me, anyway! I get pop-under ads, even when I am signed into the Dope.

I haven’t tried without logging in recently - I used to do that at my old job, but don’t have time at my new one. However, I’ll note that Ad Block Plus on Chrome is flagging one ad on all my SDMB tabs. I don’t notice anything different when I disable ABP, so I’m not sure what it’s blocking. No pop-under for me.
I’m not getting ads on this Board. However, recently I’ve started getting an entire new window pop up with an Alibaba ad any time I click on a link on the main Straight Dope page. That’s new.
